SIR GEORGE STRICKLAND has, we regret to say, been suffering from influenza
during the last few days, which has prevented his attendance in the House of
THE RIBBLE. - Yesterday week, MR. SWAINSON, chairman, MR. R. PARKER, one of
the directors, MR. P. PARK, Navigation Company, had an interview with the
Right Hon. R. A. CHRISTOPHER, M.P., Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, at
the Duchy office, in London, on the subject of the reclaimed land. The
deputation were introduced by MR. WILSON PATTEN, M.P. The wishes of the
company were stated to the chancellor, who promised to give his attention to
the subject. The deputationn were received most courteously.
THE PEEL STATUE. - Yesterday, the statue of the late SIR R. PEEL was placed
upon its pedestal. It is complete, excepting that the pediment requires a
little chiselling, which will only occupy the sculptor a short time. It is

MR. GRENFELL, M.P., has postponed for a short time his intended visit to
Preston, in order to be in the House of Commons on Monday next, at the
discussion on the appropriation of the four seats vacant by the
disfranchisement of Sudbury and St. Alban's. It is also, we believe, SIR G.
STRICKLAND's intention, in a short time, to pay a visit to his constituents.
PRISON ACCOMMODATION AND DISCIPLINE. A meeting of the committee appointed
at the last annual session to enquire into the accommodation afforded by the
various county gaols, met on Thursday last, at the constabulary office, in
this town. E. ASHWORTH, Esq., was appointed chairman, and the REV. J. S.
BIRLEY deputy chairman. The other business transacted was the ordering a
number of returns, among them being one requiring the amount expended in
alterations and new buildings at each prison from 1836 to the present time.
WILFUL DAMAGE. - On Thursday night last, some malicious person cut in three

sculptor, to raise the PEEL statue to its destination. The object of so
