I am looking for ancestors and descendants of my grandfather Robert FRANKLAND
who was born in Barrow in Furnace in 15 Nov 1894. He married Mary Isabella
LAURIE and with her family came to the states about the early 1920's. Before
he left he was living in Manchester where their oldest child was born.
He is the son of Joesph FRANKLAND and Alice MUCKLE
It is believed he was 1 of 4 or 5 children. I believe he had 2 sister MARY
and AGNUS and 2 brothers MARK and ?? all supposely born in Barrow in Furnace.
If anyone has any information I would love to hear from you.
If any one could give me more info on the following people, I'd really
Bracewell, Joseph b c 1770 possibly Whalley or Blackburn. Does anyone have
access to parish records for the above places. (I realise Blackburn would
have more than one parish church)
Mills, Isaac m Betty; they had a daughter Harriet, bap 22 Nov 1818, St
Peter's Church, Oldham.
Though I was born in Oldham and all my grandparents & some of my maternal
grandmothers siblings lived there, they came from all over England:
Wootton, Oxon; Leckhampstead, Bucks; Gnossall, Staffs; Sheffield, Yorks;
Doncaster, Yorks; Saddleworth, Yorks. It's fascinating unweaving it all.
Is anyone researching the ION surname in Over Kellet & Lancaster Lancs?

I don't know if you will agree but, in my experience, the Hession name
is fairly rare. I have only run across it once personally. You asked:
> Is there anyone on the list doing the same research. Or does anyone
> on the list know anyone by that name (HESSION) and if so could they
> gather some information for me, for which I would most gratefull.
I used to work with a fellow named Peter Hession up in Boaton, Mass. He
and his wife had immigrated from Ireland and we knew each other while
employed at Digital Equipment Corp. in Maynard, Mass.
I left the area in 1979 but in the mid-80s I bumped into him at Logan
Airport in Boston as I was passing through. To the best of my
knowledge, he is still living there.
I did a lookup on "Peter Hession, Massachusetts" and found the following
Hession, Peter J 18 Egg Harbor Rd, West Yarmouth, MA
Hession, Peter J 11 Old Boston Rd Ste 502, Tewksbury, MA
Hession, Peter M 15 George St, Winthrop, MA 02152-3109
I can't recall his middle initial but I felt that if any of the three
were to be his listing, Winthrop was probably the right town bsed on the
locale that he used to reside in. So I searched for "Hession, Winthrop,
MA" and got the following.
Hession, Celia M 15 George St Apt 2, Winthrop, MA
Hession, John 15 George St Apt 2, Winthrop, MA 02152-3109
Hession, Peter M 15 George St, Winthrop, MA 02152-3109
Hession, Siobhan 15 George St, Winthrop, MA 02152-3109
I couldn't remember his wife's name just that I had a problem in
preonoucing it - "Siobhan"? They had two children - "Celia and John"?
Peter was a very friendly and outgoing guy. If I found the right one, I
think he would be receptive to a phone call or a letter. Mention my
name and remind him that when I saw him last I gave him my business card
and he was supposed to call me!

I'm researching the surnames Shutt and Dunn in the Manchester- Salford
region @1850. Any help with those names would be appreciated. I have a
birth certificate with the address given as Butterworthed Buildings.
Does anybody know the street address of the buildings?
Just checking into the list. I have ancestors William and Elizabeth Latham
Mears from Wigan arriving in the US in 1820. I know as much as anyone should
about them since 1820; the remaining puzzle involves William Mears, born in
Chester in 1796. Family legend has it that his father was a "Grenadier
Guard," but beyond that we have no clue who his parents were or how he
happened to get to Wigan. I have a theory -- but no proof -- that both
parents died when he was young and he was sent to Wigan to be raised by an
uncle, Joseph Mears.
Would be most grateful if anyone could add anything to this.

Thanks for the information about Susannah Roscoe. It seems to fit with the
info we have.
We have a Susannah Roscoe, daughter of Peter Roscoe and Ann Hulme, who would
seem to fit. Ann Hulme had a brother, James, who was married to Mary Ann
(surname unknown). So we feel that this confirms that your Susannah is the
same person as our Susannah. The fact that she was living at Smithfold Lane
is another plus point. There is a Smithfold Lane in Little Hulton, near
We have the 1851 census entry for Smithfold Lane which gives the family of
James & Mary Ann with Susannah listed as their niece. There is also Ann
Chapman listed as James' sister.
We have taken this to be Ann Hulme who married Peter Roscoe and then
presumably married someone called Chapman. We haven't followed this up yet
as Ann is the sister of the direct ancestor (gt-gt-grandfather).
We have an 1841 census entry in Buckley Lane, Little Hulton, which gives
Catherine Hulme, 30, Cotton weaver; Peter Roscow, 20, labourer; Ann Roscow,
30, Sushannah Roscow, 1, Mary Edge, 30, and Betty Edge, 2mths.
We have constructed the families from census information and IGI entries. We
have not yet made firm connections using evidence from certificates. It
seems highly likely that the connections are correct but we still have to
Does any of this fit with what you have? We would be most interested to hear

Does anyone know what job would be done by a groom?
One who grooms horses is the one that immediately comes to mind but my
GGG Grandfather who had this job spent most of his life in the railway
industry so I'm wondering if there's any connection.
All suggestions will be much appreciated.

I am looking for information on the following:
oseph STEELE, wife's name Emma STEELE, maiden name FOX. Residence in 1896
11 Hutchinson Street, Beswick, N. Manchester.
Their were fifteen children in all but my mother was the youngest and was
born in 1996, so probably most of them had married moved away. Some of the
siblings were Ada, Jesse, Polly, Emma, Sydney, Ernie, Joseph. James, Albert,
the rest I don't know.
Any help would be appreciated,
Am researching my grandparents, Joseph Keating and Ada Garner who were
married about 1892 in England and moved to the U.S. around 1895.
According to an old book, my grandmother, Ada Garner, resided at 106 S
Stephen St., Salford in Jan 28, 1882. Her parents were William and Elza
Garner and she had brothers James, Arthur and John. Not sure of any
other children. I am told that they may have lived above a store which
was at that address at one time. Also not sure if my grandfather came
from the same area; his parents were Joseph and Elisabeth (Smith)
If anyone has access to census records that would confirm this, I would
appreciate the information and any other information that might be
available from the census records.

Hi To everyone on the list
I submitted an introduction sometime ago when I first got on the
list. So far no replies. I have been researching my surname for
sometime now. But at the present time I'me at a standstill. My own
line from my grandfather I'me upto date with, though I never met my
grandfather, John Hession as he died in 1916 in Blackburn, my home
town. From the 1881 Cencus the family was living at 106, Welcomb St
Hulme. My grandfather was the eldest child living there. He was
22 yrs old at that time, and was a widower. His occupation was that
of a Tailor. As was his father Patrick Hession. Patrick & his wife
Mary were both listed as being born in Ireland, All five children
were listed as being born in Manchester. My grandfather siblings
were Thomas born abt 1863, Augustine 1865, Mary 1870, and Joseph
1873.From my greatgrandfather's death certificate, he died at 106,
Welcomb St Hulme, in 1893. At age 60, so he had to born abt 1832.
What I don't know is where in Ireland: And the whereabouts of
any descendants, of my grandfather's siblings. Today there are
numerous Hession's living in or around Manchester, I've tried
contacting several, With only one reply, and that one was a wrong
one. The earliest that I've traced my GGfather to Manchester is
1871, via the Trade directories.
Is there anyone on the list doing the same research. Or does anyone
on the list know anyone by that name (HESSION) and if so could they
gather some information for me, for which I would most gratefull.
Roy Hession, Vancouver B,C. Canada.
I am researching my Hardman ancestors. The earliest I have is a John
Hardman who married Frances Mills, August 7, 1825 at St. Nicholas,
Liverpool. Their son John was baptised on May 6, 1827 at St. Peters,
Liverpool. Does anyone have any possible links?
I am trying to trace the ancestors of Joseph Bradney born 4 Jul 1882 in Lancashire
(sorry, I have no other information).
His parents were Thomas & Mary Ann Bradney who moved to the States in 1886.
Is there anyone who could look up some census records for me? Has anyone seen any
BRADNEY gravestones in their local cemetry and could send me photos?
I would appreciate any information on the BRADNEY name in this or any other area and
thank you all in advance.
