Edward, I appreciate your offer so much - but I really can't give you much to go on.
In her family history (quoted in my previous message), my grandmother spelled the name
"Lompe," but I have been also looking at Lampe, Lamper, and Lumpe.
In 1997 I wrote to some Lompes in or near Muscatine, and got one reply; but they
apparently knew nothing about their family, except that they came from Germany.
I have searched the Muscatine County censuses for 1840 and 1850 (they were supposed to
have immigrated about 1835), but found no likely entries. I did find a Henry Lumpe,
laborer, in the 1859 William's Directory for Muscatine; he could have been the Henry
Lompe mentioned by my grandmother, but there's no way to be sure. The few other
records I've found are even more ambiguous.
It seems to me the best hope would be to find some kind of records on Henry Lompe, since
he's the only one for whom I have more than a surname.
Since things appear likely to be frustrating and unproductive, I don't think it's
fair to ask you to undertake researches on my behalf. But if you should happen to come
across anything, I'd appreciate a note! Thanks!
