Reg and List
In response to Reg Rundle's contribution. I give below the top of my
Lakeman Tree, which is largely based in Aveton Gifford. You will see that
it includes the birth of Alice and extends things back one more
generation, but then comes to a stop. There are a couple of points where
I disagree with what Reg posted. Alice and Thomas married on 7 Apr 1815,
Mary Lakeman married Servington Savery on 7 Sep 1813 at AG, by Licence.
That may be because one of them had been married before, or because Savery
was a Gentleman and wished not to have his details read out in church.
Fowlescombe was a big house, so he was a man of some substance in the
I am not aware of Mary's birth, and there are several people who have
looked at the Lakemans in this area at this time. There are plenty of
Lakeman entries around and a comprehensive check would be worthwhile.
Reg says that Jane Jarvis Rundle (who I take to be a daughter of Alice and
Thomas) is noted as the neice of Servington Savery, and thus Mary is the
sister of Alice. I think we are reading too much into things if we draw
this conclusion. It is quite possible that they were distantly related,
in which case "neice" could be used as shorthand for 2nd cousin once
removed, or something.
Despite these comments, which are minor, I am grateful for Reg posting
this info - there is much work to be done sorting out the Lakemans in and
around the Modbury/AG/Bigbury/Loddiswell area.

==== LAKEMAN Mailing List ====
Generation No. 1
1. PHILIP LAKEMAN He married AGNES.
Philip Lakeman would have been born in the 1730s. There were in Aveton
Gifford at that time two families. Philip Lakeman, who married Rebecca
Elliot in Oct 1735, and had 3 daughters by 1738, and William and Mary, who
had daughters in 1734 and 1737. There is a reference to a burial of Grace
Lakeman of Ringmore in 1743. Maybe look there for details, or else
Children of PHILIP LAKEMAN and AGNES are:
2. JOHN LAKEMAN, b. Aug 1757, Modbury; d. Feb 1832, Aveton Gifford.
3. PHILIP LAKEMAN.
ALICE LAKEMAN, bapt.6 Sep 1765, Modbury.
AMOS SPRY LAKEMAN, bapt. 27 Feb 1767, Modbury.
4. GEORGE LAKEMAN, b. Jul 1768, Modbury.
Generation No. 2
2. JOHN LAKEMAN was baptised 20 Aug 1757 in Modbury, the son of 1. Philip
Lakeman and his wife Agnes, and was buried 1 Feb 1832 in Aveton Gifford,
age 74. He married THOMAZIN PARNELL 18 Oct 1782 in Aveton Gifford,
daughter of RICHARD PARNELL and THOMASIN. She was born 25 Mar 1757
in Aveton Gifford, baptised there on 18 Apr and was buried there on 7 Jul
1826, aged 69.
The children of JOHN LAKEMAN and THOMAZIN PARNELL are:
JOHN LAKEMAN, bapt. 30 Oct 1788, Aveton Gifford.
AGNES LAKEMAN, bapt. 2 Dec 1788, Aveton Gifford; m. GEORGE WILLCOCKS,

RUNDLE, 7 Apr 1815, Aveton Gifford.
5. RICHARD PARNELL LAKEMAN, b. Dec 1795, Aveton Gifford; d. 2 Nov
1884, Aveton Gifford.
The entries in the Aveton Gifford parish baptismal register for John (bapt
Oct 1788) and Agnes (bapt Dec 1788) appear to have been written into the
register later. It is possible that they were twins, and that John was
sickly so baptised very quickly, but it would be unusual for the other
twin not to have been baptised at the same time, or that there was an
error in the date where they were added in to the register.
3. PHILIP LAKEMAN is assumed to have been the son of 1. Philip Lakeman and
his wife Agnes. He married AGNES PHILLIPS 15 Apr 1785 in Modbury.
The assumption that Philip is the son of the Philip & Agnes Lakeman, who
were having children in Modbury in the 1750s and 1760s, has been made by
Barbara Groves, who has supplied the data for this branch of the family,
but she has not been able to find the relevant baptism, so the link back
from here must be regarded as suspect.
Children of PHILIP LAKEMAN and AGNES PHILLIPS are:
ANN LAKEMAN, baptised 24 Mar 1786, Modbury.
PHILIP LAKEMAN, baptised 7 May 1791, Modbury.
WILLIAM LAKEMAN, baptised 1 Dec 1797, Modbury.

1884 in Aveton Gifford, aged 88 (M.I.). He married ANN TROON 29 Mar 1824
in Manaccan, Cornwall, daughter of WILLIAM TROON and MARY ROSKILLY. Ann
was baptised 11 Jul 1802 in Manaccan, Cornwall, and died 22 Sep 1879 in
Aveton Gifford. He was a carpenter, possibly at shipyards, since he
married and his first child was born on the Helford River, and one of his
children was born at Sheerness, which is also close to a dockyard.
Children of RICHARD LAKEMAN and ANN TROON are:
JOHN LAKEMAN, b. Abt. 1825; d. Mar 1825, Mawnan, Cornwall (infant).
THOMAZINE LAKEMAN, b. 1826; d. 14 Nov 1874, Aveton Gifford.
Memorial inscription says she was aged 48, daughter of Richard and Ann
lakeman, so she was unmarried.
