For the benefit of those who are new to the Lakeman Mailing List, I am
undertaking a One Name Study into the surname Lakeman which means that I
collect and put onto a database every reference to the name that I come
across. I have a complete list of the Indexes to Births Marriages & Deaths
in England & Wales up to 1920, plus every reference in the 1881 Census
Index, the IGI
for Devon, Cornwall & London/Middlesex. I also have the references from the
Census Indexes for Devon for 1851 and for Cornwall for 1841, 1851, 1861, &
My own Lakeman family come from Mevagissey in Cornwall so I would also
welcome contact from 'cousins' who can link back to Cornwall.
If you need any help please let me know and I will try and assist you.
Likewise if you have any information which can be added to the database
please let me know-it will be very gratefully received.
I look forward to hearing from you.
With kindest regards

I am new to the list so I will go ahead and
My name is Mark Hayward. I was born in Cincinnati,
Ohio, USA. I currently live in Chicago but have lived
in Europe (Germany and Poland) for the past eight
For years I knew only that my great-great-grandmother
Henrietta P. Hayward was born in Massachusetts.
Having returned to the United States and having
purchased a computer, I was able to research more
I located burial records for Henrietta, her parents
and grandparents at a cemetery in Cincinnati.
The cemetery records were the key that unlocked the
"door" slammed shut when a woman's maiden name
The records indicated that Henrietta's maiden name was
Lakeman and listed both her place of birth and her
After additional searches of the cemetery records I
was able to learn the following:
Henrietta Pearson Lakeman was born in Newburyport,
Essex County, Massachusetts on July 23, 1843. She
married my great-great-grandfather, Henry Roll
Henrietta was the daughter of Daniel Lakeman (born
June 12, 1808 in Ipswich, Massachusetts) and Sarah
Jane Atkinson(born 1810 in Newburyport).
This Daniel Lakeman was the son of Captain Daniel
Lakeman (born January 11, 1781 in Ipswich) and
Susannah Fowler (born December 19, 1780 in Ipswich).
All three generations are buried in Cincinnati.
Captain Daniel Lakeman's parents are listed as Daniel
and Sarah Lakeman with no additional information.
I do not know why the family relocated to Cincinnati.
I also do not know if they came all at once or at
What I can gather from the records I have is that
Henrietta had a brother Edwin Lakeman, who was born in
Massachusetts in January of 1848. Edwin died in
Cincinnati in March of 1853. So that narrows down the
date of migration to the five years between 1848 and
Also located on these lots is a second son of Captain
Daniel Lakeman. His name is Joseph F. Lakeman, who
died on March 11, 1900 at the age of 87 years. He was
married to Mary Goodenough who was born in Rushville,
Indiana. She died May 5, 1894 at the age of 68 years.
Of Joseph F. and Mary Lakeman's children buried on the
lot, all were listed as being born in Ohio. The
earliest one was born June 16, 1848. This record
indicates to me that the whole family probably did not
relocate to Ohio at the same time.
I made contact recently on another message board with
another researcher who is from the same Cincinnati
neighborhood, Cumminsville, where the Lakeman family
lived. She says she has a History of Cumminsville
written in 1914. There is a picture of Joseph F.
Lakeman indicating that he was the town's mayor from
1869 - 1871. In later years Cumminsville was
incorporated into the city of Cincinnati. I am eagerly
waiting for documentation!
This is about all I know at present. I would love to
hear form anyone who can tie into this - especially
any information relating to Captain Daniel Lakeman and

Mark....our Lakeman family currently lives is Cincinnati, Ohio
Our earilest relative that we know of is
John Lakeman married Elizabeth Morris
on May 10 1805. They were married in Richmond Va.
We have no date of birth or parents because during the Civil War....all
the records were burned at the court houses.
They migrated from Richmond. Va. to West Va. then into Kentucky...then
to Cincinnati, and Indiana....
We figured that John Lakeman was born around 1780...
Do you know all the children born to Capt.
Daniel....your Daniel (the son) may be brothers to our John.
We have many listings of Lakeman's in Ipswich, Mass. Vermont/New Hamp.
and even into England but cannot find the connection to our
I will forward you an e-mail of a person that might be able to help you
since she does a lot of research on the Lakeman's in Mass.
I am also going to forward your letter to other Lakeman's from
Cincinnati area that may have a connection to you.....
Good luck in your search and let us know what is going on .... we may
have struck it rich ..... something may just click into place to solve
I sure would like to have another cousin.....
there are a lot of them already since my father Giles Arnold Lakeman was
the oldest of 11 children.....married my mother, Josephine Theresa Rundo
they had 6 children....I am the 3rd.
and his father....my grandfather...
Giles William Lakeman born 1891, was one of 9 children, married Laura
My great grandfather John Henry Lakeman born 1849 was one of 12
children. Married to Sarah Elizabeth Arnold.
my g - g grandfather John Wesley was born 1815 in Henrica County , Va.
married to Elizabeth Ann Roberts (Betsy Ann)
John Wesley's parents were John Lakeman and Elizabeth Morris....we have

Unfortunately, all the Lakeman information I know is
what was in that introductory posting. The only
children of Captain Daniel Lakeman (b. Ipswich 1781,
d. Cincinnati 1855) and Susannah Fowler (b. Ipswich
1780, d. Cincinnati 1855)that I know of are the two
buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati:
My great-great-great-grandfather Daniel Lakeman (b.
Ipswich 1808, d. Cincinnati 1869) who was married to
Sarah Jane Atkinson (b. Newburyport 1810, d.
The other son was Joseph F. Lakeman (b. Mass. about
1813, d. Cincinnati 1900) who was married to Mary
Goodenough (b. abt. 1826 in Rushville, Indiana; d.
1894 in Cincinnati).
All remaining Lakemans buried on these two lots were
children or grandchildren, etc. of the younger Daniel
Lakeman or of Joseph F. Lakeman.
I have never met any other Lakemans in Cincinnati. My
link to the Lakemans is through a
great-great-grand-mother, who married a Hayward. That
was quite a long time ago. Unfortunately, my
grandfather Hayward died long before I was born, so
there was no one to relate any oral history to me from
that side of the family.
There is always a possibility that your Lakeman
ancester was a sibling but at this stage of the game,
I have no way of telling. I need to do a lot more
I would be eager to explore any contacts with other
Lakeman researchers and would even like to meet any
Lakeman relatives that are out there.
One other item that I read in your message that caught
my attention is that you mentioned having a relative
The Lakemans are on my father's side. My mother's
maiden name was Grote and they came from the Hamilton,
Ohio area. I am researching them as well.
All I know is that my grandfather was Russell Louis
Grote (1907-1968)who married (later divorced) Marion
Russell's was the son of Louis Grote (1874 - 1937) and
Magdalena Ruhl (1883 - 1957).
Louis was the son of Herman Grote and Catherine Kleyer
By any chance do these Grotes tie in anywhere with
