The cemetery should have a "managing" authority--be it a cemetery office or a
church. COULD be the local government, but I've never seen cemetery records in a
courthouse. If anything, in the town's municipal building.
Regardless, if there are any records at all there should be an "inhabitants" or
"decedents" file. Often these are individual index cards (one per deceased) but
not always. If this does not exist, there might be a "plot record" with the
details of the purchaser of the plot and which plot was purchased. Thankfully you know
the purchaser's name!
I'm not familiar with this cemetery, so I have no idea who maintains it or it's
records. But by and large across the country there are common practices--and those above
are most common. And once you get to the area, hit up that cemetery FIRST THING.
Whomever has the records may have very strange hours of business. You want to know it as
early in your trip as possible lest you miss that window of opportunity! We have one in
NJ that's open ONLY weekday mornings...!
Would love to hear about your experience with this. I've written a few articles on
cemetery research for NGS Newsmagazine and am always looking for information on the way
things are done in different areas of the country.
