Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Internet Explorer has an option under the view tab to change the text size
on any given website rather than change your whole system. I tried the site
at the largest text size and you can read it fine. It does engage the scroll
bars at that size but you can read it better. I really like the new layout.
I had already visited yours several times so I knew when I saw it what you
were trying to do and I think it will be a great success.

Everyone who has registered on the new LAGenWeb site has had their
permissions raised to the highest publishing level which means you can
initiate new articles or modify existing ones. Feel free to do either with
the existing articles. As you can see, most of them are mock ups anyway.
You can practice writing articles. Add links too the links page, etc.
You can even upload photos or other images with your articles make sure
they are small enough, around 150x150 pixels max for the most part.
Dont be afraid to experiment around and discover more about the site.
Thanks,
Edward

Ed,
I really like it. One thing you need to do though for us half blind folks is
make the font bigger! That is one thing I have always liked about the
current website as compared to some of the other states I work with is that
our font is easy to read!
Other than that, I love the new look and layout!

Ok, now for the information concerning the new website.
First, let me say that it is not near ready for public use. I just want to
present it to the parish coordinators for an early view and show you how you
can benefit from the new site format. I have filled it with mockup stories
and news items along with real information. I will be working on it for a
couple of more weeks before it will be ready for public access.
The site is located at www.lagenweb.net/lagw/ Of course our current site
will continue to be available at www.lagenweb.org and www.lagenweb.com. I
will gradually move everything from the old site to the new one before even
considering removing the original site. Of course, at that time the .org
and .com names will join the .net name at the new site.
Again, I remind you that it is partly a mock up for now and no particular
formatting in it is set in stone. I will try to get the LAGenWeb logo on it
over the weekend if I can.
First you probably will notice the "Newsletter" formatting with the news
items and newsflashes. Space for these articles will be available for each
coordinator to use for making announcements which pertain to your parishes.
You can announce new items on your site, events occurring in your parishes,
what ever would be of interest to visitors to your parish or parish sites.
You will have a logon name and password so that you can write your own
articles at your convenience. Articles can even have start and finish dates
so that you can write an article today about an event 6 months from now,
have it be visible to visitors 60 days before the event, and disappear on
midnight the day of the even. So announcements won't sit there outdated
until someone remembers to remove it.
There will be a calendar available which you will be able to use to post
events pertaining to your parish. And I have a few more ideas including
possibly having an online genealogy database where people could enter their
Louisiana ancestors which others can search and even add names to.
The FAQ section will have the articles concerning Louisiana research
procedures and techniques, Available resources, etc. Again, any parish
coordinator would have the right and ability to contribute articles to the
FAQ section. Probably won't call it FAQ, but Louisiana Research Aids or
something.
The Links page will have a number of categories and everyone, parish
coordinators as well as general visitors will be able to contribute links to
the page. Your links will be posted immediately, non-LAGenWeb volunteer
contributions will be posted after I review them and approve them. This is
the case with almost everything on the site. This feature makes the site
potentially a very dynamic site which will have something new on it all the
time.
Go to the site, look around and visit all the areas on the site. You will
find some which I have not customized at all. And others that will be
incomplete, but I think you will get the idea of the potential for the site.
Register as a user when you visit the site. It will then notify me that you
have registered, and then I will manually upgrade you to a level which will
allow you to contribute information to the site.
Actually, I believe after you register, you can submit articles, links and
other information to the site which will be held in limbo until I approve
it, then it will be released to the public. The upgraded permissions I would
give you would allow you to submit articles without my approval, which makes
the site even easier to keep up to date.
Check it out and let me know what you think. I invite all your comments and
suggestions.
Oh, I have setup another site, my personal one, at www.edwardhayden.com
which is a little more fully developed than the LAGenWeb site. You can visit
it to see some of the features which I have not yet installed on the
LAGenWeb site.
Thanks for your interest in this new project. I think you will see even
more things we can do with this new site to encourage interest and
participation of Louisiana Genealogy Researchers.
There is a lot more to discuss and I hope we are able to do so over the next
few weeks. Unfortunately, as nearly all of us are, I have been and will
continue to be pretty busy at work, but I should be able to spend a few
hours on the project each evening until it is complete enough to present it
to our visitors.
Thanks,
Edward

I just wanted to thank everyone for your support in the recent near
election.
I appreciate the opportunity to continue serving as the Louisiana State
Coordinator for a while longer.
As most of you know I announced quite some time ago that I would step down
and call for an election for a new coordinator. Several months later, I
sort of changed my mind and decided I would not mind remaining, but still
wanted to call for an election since I had previously promised one. In
addition, rumblings throughout the project indicated that if I did not
volunteer to have an election, higher ups would eventually demand one.
I had another reason for wanting to call for an election as I decided I
wanted to design a new state website. And I did not want to go to the
trouble of putting a new website together and then get kicked out...
I have started the project of developing the new website and want to invite
each of you to visit it.
In a separate message to be sent immediately after this one I will send the
url for the new site and describe what is in store for the site and how you
can help make it a valuable site for the project.
I am writing it in a separate message since it may become a long message and
not every coordinator may want to wade through it.
Thanks again for the vote of confidence and have a fun and valuable Summer
ahead.
