Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi.
MY calendar is marked FOR SURE.
Folks, you have no idea how beautiful that river is.
My Dad and I went water skiing every afternoon in the summer time.
If he got home early enough, we'd head down to the Tickfaw.
I can hardly wait to get there. I'm probably gonna sit on the deck
and bawl for the first hour!
There is a new state park very close to Carolyn's that has
cabins to rent. If you are coming and don't want to stay in
a hotel, that would be a great option. I'm sure they have camper
hook-ups too.
You gotta be there!

Tickfaw State Park
RV Hook Ups
Cabins
Picnic Areas
Stay Awhile
Overnight visitors can stay at one of 14 vacation cabins that overlook a
cypress swamp. Each air-conditioned, two-bedroom cabin sleeps eight persons
and includes a fireplace, fully-equipped kitchen and bathroom. Thirty
campsites with water and electricity, fire ring and picnic table are
available for recreational vehicle owners. An additional 20 tent campsites
offer a tranquil setting for tent campers. A climate-controlled bathhouse and
laundry facility are also available for camper use.
A Group Camp accommodates up to 48 visitors in two spacious dormitory wings,
each wing served by private bath facilities. The dormitories flank a dining
hall and central kitchen, equipped with commercial cooking equipment. Day-use
visitors can reserve a covered picnic shelter to enjoy a traditional crawfish
boil or an old-fashioned family picnic.
A gift shop in the Nature Center (open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily) offers
souvenirs with a local flavor.
Cultural History
<Picture: Layout map of Tickfaw State Park>
Originally inhabited by the prehistoric Mississippian culture, the French
were among the area's first European settlers. Springfield grew out of a
trading post on the Old Spanish Trail and became a shipping center. The
Natalbany and Tickfaw rivers were used to transport cotton and timber to New
Orleans.
The contemporary agriculture character was created by logging operations
which left virtually no area untouched. Early settlers utilized much of the
cleared acreage to establish a rich agriculture community, providing a
variety of fruits and vegetables to the surrounding urban areas. Truck
farming crops such as strawberries, sweet corn, cucumber and peppers are area
favorites. Pick-your-own berry farms are popular with tourists and residents
beginning in December with Louisiana's famous strawberries, and continuing
through early summer when blackberries and blueberries are in season. Logging
and forest product industries remain an important part of the local economy.
A Short Drive
Only a short drive from Baton Rouge, Hammond and New Orleans, Tickfaw State
Park is located just seven miles southwest of Springfield on the Tickfaw
River.
Tickfaw State Park--27225 Patterson Road, Springfield, LA 70462-8906;
225-294-5020 or 1-888-981-2020) is located 32 miles east of Baton Rouge off
I-12. From Baton Rouge, take I-12 to the Albany/Springfield exit. Travel 2
miles south on La. Hwy. 43, merge with Hwy. 42 and continue one mile to the
center of Springfield. Turn west on La. Hwy. 1037 and travel six miles to
Patterson Road (across from Woodland Baptist Church), then south 1.2 miles to
the park entrance. Tickfaw State Park is a unique 1200-acre park located
along three miles of the Tickfaw River. The park offers diverse recreational,
nature and educational opportunities.

BTW,
Let me clarify...The boards you already have had in place are
included on the Resource Boards; the new boards are the remainder of the
suite that no CC requested yet, for their county/parish.
Also, mailing lists were started only when there wasn't already one in
place...if you had one before, that's the same one indicated on your
parish Resource Board. Sorry for the confusion [g]

I think I had better tell the coordinators where I live so that might
help them decide if they can make it or not, distance, etc. I live in
Killian, have a Springfield address, so the actual address won't help
that much. My phone # is 225-695-6591, which is a Maurepas exchange.
I live near the Albany, LA exit off I-12 between Denham Springs and
Hammond, in Livingston Parish. If you come I-12 to Albany,
Springfield exit, take Hwy 42, then at the next stop sign, go left on
Hwy 43 to Springfield, when you get to Springfield take Hwy 22 south to
Tickfaw river, (43 runs into 22) about 5 miles. cross over the river,
go past Tickfaw Marina, take the first black top road (Lower Rome road)
to the left, go about 1 mile, you will see a long white board fence,
turn left on the blacktop in front of the fence, go about 1 mile, at
the stop sign turn left, in front of the pink "Barbie House" as my
granddaughter calls it. Go about 9 houses on the right, we have a green
sign with Henderson, 20466 Fairway Drive under the mailbox. If you are
coming from North or South on I-55, you can take the Springfield,
Ponchatoula Exit, then follow Hwy 22 from Ponchatoula to Springfield,
then on the same way to my house. Is this clear........as mud ?????
Maybe Don Johnson or Deanne Pardue can help me give better
directions?????
Thanks, and hope to see lots of you here!!!!!
Carolyn
Folks,
Sine GenConnect has opened the entire suite of their forums
[Query, Bio, Obit, Will, Deed, Bible, Pension] for every USGW
county/parish...you need to decide if you are going to go ahead and
administer the new ones in addition to the ones you currently admin. for
your Parish.
If you don't...someone else will eventually request the rest of the
suites, or 'clusters'; but you all definitely deserve first choice...so,
I'm just reminding you to make sure if you want them or not.
In case anyone needs that email that some of you may've skimmed over [I
skim over things alot...lol] that I fwd to this list; I'll be glad to
re-post.
If you want to see the RW Resource page, with the surprise new features
they started for your Parish[es], go to:
http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/LA/
b
PS- I like mine for Webster; but they've also started mailing lists for
every USGW county/parish.
I wasn't real crazy about them doing that without asking, tho my
LAWEBSTE-L list is nearly 2 yrs. old.
I'm a new GenWeb parish coordinator (I'm about a month old (ha! I wish))
I have all of the GenConnect boards on my new site. I have a q for you all,
Bobby in particular: Are we to just link to the resources page for our
parish, or can we actually copy the HTML and place those aspects of the
resources on our website as long as it's at Rootsweb? I saw an earlier
post (yes, the FWD one!) and thought it said something about copying the
HTML, but I accidentally (OOPS!) deleted the email. My AOL phone line was
down for 4 days and when I got back on, I just got "delete happy" I guess.
Advice please, and thanks in advance!
Sandi
Hi,
My name is Carolyn Brumfield Henderson, I am the recently new Parish
Coordinator for Washington Parish.
My husband, Roy, and I would like to invite the State and Parish
Coordinators (if I am leaving anyone out, please let me know) for a
fish fry at our home September 25, 1999, starting at 3 pm. Jan Craven
and her husband are graciously supplying the fish. You each will
probably be called on to bring a dish, i.e. snack, dessert, BYOB, etc.
Roy and I live on the water near the beautiful Tickfaw River and the
Manchac Swamp. We have a pontoon, or "party barge" if anyone would like
a ride down the river, or we can have fun becoming acquainted with one
another while we enjoy the fish.
You will be hearing more about this at a later date. Comments or
suggestions will be appreciated.
Please try to come, we would love to have you.
Carolyn

It would be appreciated if all the SCs would fwd this to your state lists.
If someone would also fwd it to the ALL list?
The form for CCs to add a link to their county sites on the RW resource
pages is now up and ready for everyone to use. This form is only for
adding a link to a county that is on RootsWeb.
http://resources.rootsweb.com/~clusters/utilities/addsite.html
The form for adding a link to those counties not on RootsWeb is not yet
fixed but is being worked on.
Thanks,

One of the things about life is you either keep improving or you
become a corpse standing on your feet.
That's true for RootsWeb, and it's equally true for USGenWeb. Since
USGenWeb was founded, many other organizations have sprung up that
partially or wholly attempt to clone USGenWeb's content: ALHN,
GenExchange, Broderbund's GenForum, Ancestry, Randall Haight's
genweb.net, ...
If USGenWeb is going to stay the premier geographically-oriented
genealogy project, one of the things it's going to need to do is
continuously improve the range and quality of services it provides
to the genealogical community.
In tonight's RootsWeb Review, RootsWeb is announcing "County
Resource" pages for every county in America. The pages include or
will include links to USGenWeb sites on RootsWeb, a mailing list, a
GenConnect suite, a link registry, search engines for the USGenWeb
Archives and the RSL, an event calendar, a guestbook, and various
other tools.
You can see the County Resources at:
http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/
We expect to be adding tools to the Resource pages as rapidly as we
can. There will surely be a Social Security Death Index search and
some other nice features coming on line in the not-to-distant future.
###
So isn't this just another competitor for USGenWeb?
==> Not at all. <==
While we're still working out the details, RootsWeb's intent is to
put each County Resource page and all the resources on them at the
disposal of the appropriate USGenWeb County Coordinator. CCs can
link to the pages, or they can borrow the HTML from the pages and
incorporate the tools directly into their own pages. How (or even
if) you administer those resources is largely your own choice.
That's your own choice. The tools are there if you want them. And
there will be more and better tools available to you as time goes on.
Speaking personally, I hope most folks choose to use the tools.
USGenWeb is one of the two most impressive projects I've ever seen
unfold on the Internet (the development of Linux is the other ... ),
and I would very much like to see USGenWeb stay on the cutting edge
of technology and provide better services to genealogists than any
of its imitators. Cheers, B.
