Still looking (alas, intermittently) for parents/ siblings of Rachel
LeForge/LaForge/LaFourche (b ca 1750-60) who married (ca 1775?) John DRAKE
and had 8 children, in/near Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ.
LAVINA DRAKE, b. 18 November, 1778, NJ; d. 14 September, 1857, S.
Charleston, Clark Co., OH. m Joseph Morris 10 Jan 1796 NJ.
JOSIAH DRAKE, b. Abt. 1770, NJ; d. 1809, Mason Co., KY. m Parmila Unknown
who was b Middlesex Co., NJ.
CORNELIUS DRAKE, b. 15 March, 1781, Plainfield, Piscataway Twp.,
Middlesex Co., NJ; d. 14 June, 1833, Brown Co., OH. m
ASA DRAKE, b. 1793? NJ d. after 1850.
I have been looking for a John Drake with a wife Rachel in the period
1770-1785, but no luck.
Clues to Rachel's parentage:
1. One possibility for Rachel's parents: Nicholas Leforge (June
1736-April 1769) died in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ, leaving wife Syche
and 4 children: Nicholas, Jacob, Nelly and Rachel. I have found no marriage
record for Rachel yet, although I have not examined all the records of the
First Baptist Church of Piscataway, just bits and pieces.
2. Because my source for Rachel gives her name as Rachel LaFourche,
there is the possibility that she is from a Canadian family.
3. Rachel and John's daughter, Lavina Drake, from whom I am descended,
married Joseph Morris on 10 January 1796 in NJ (no record found of marriage)
and immediately moved to Mason/Bracken Co., KY. Joseph was a farmer but lived
to preach ... was a Baptist minister ... Lavina and Joseph met while he was
preaching .... possibly in the First Day Baptist Church in Piscataway; Lavina
must have been from a Baptist family for them to have married. Their first
child, a daughter, was named Rachel.
4. Rachel and John's son, Cornelius Drake, had 15 children; one of the
youngest daughters was named Rachel Leforgee Drake, and she was apparently
quite proud to have been named for her grandmother.
5. A very fanciful family essay on John and Rachel (Leforge) Drake says
Rachel was French and the aunt of John LaFarge and the great aunt of
Christopher LaFarge ... I have found no connection; that must have been
6. There is a Rachel Drake b 9 March 1773 in NJ who married John
Willson probably in Sussex Co., NJ and moved to Canada in 1804 ... could be a
daughter of John and Rachel, but I haven't found any Leforges in Sussex Co.
If anyone can add to my tiny list of clues .... please do!
