In 1820 the US Congress passed a law to give land to the public in order
to settle the Louisiana land purchase in the southern States. Most of
the land in Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia and the rest of
the thirteen colonies was owned by individuals. Therefore, people
started to move west for the free land.
This movement started in about 1830, but realy picked up in the forties.
My ggGrandmother Mary was born in Georgia in 1787. She married a
Skinner at some time and came to La. I found her and her four Children
in the 1850 cenus. Her oldest son (Samuel Skinner) was my gGrandfather
and born in 1827 here in La. Here is a list of land patents that they
paid a fee for.
