(No. 2) Obituaries.
We, your committee on obituaries, beg leave to report that it has pleased
our Heavenly Father to remove several god brethren and sisters from amoung
us. 1at-We present you the obituary of Brother Calvin Smith. Brother Smith
was born in Pike County, Miss., Sept. 22, A.D. 1812, and died at the
residence of his son, J. W. Smith, in Washington Parish, La., on the 23rd
day of June. A.D. 1881, aged 69 years. He had three companions, all of whom
had preceded him to the better land. He leaves fourteen children to mourn
his, but this loss is his eternal gain. He joined the Baptist Church at
Silver Creek Church, Pike County, Miss, some thirty-five or forty years ago.
He was not a stranger to the writer. I have known him intimately from my
earliest recollections. He was always a hard laboring man. He never turned
one empty from the door, nor looked unpityingly upon the forms of suffering
and sorrow around him; his heart yearned for the desolate, wept over the
unfortunate, and his means were the property of the needy. He was a good
and useful citizen, a devoted husband, an indulgent yet God-fearing father.
He was very modest and retiring in his nature. He had acquired considerable
information by personal observation and reading, which constituted him an
agreeable companion. As a friend was warm, generous and reliable; and as a
nurse for the sick, he could not be excelled. But he has gone from earth.
We shall meet him no more in the walks of men. His disposition was so
sedate and reserved that none but the most intimate friends could fully
appreciate his merit. For more than a year prior to his death his health
had been declining. He had wound up his business and set his house in
order, and was awaiting his Maker's call. There seemed to be a very
striking resemblance between his last days on earth and those of Brother Wm.
S. Holmes, whose obituary the writer of this proposed about three years ago,
and was published in the minutes of the Bogue Chitto Association. When Bro.
Smith reached the end of his earthly pilgrimage, he stood like a plumed
warrior, the battle fought, the victory won, and the gates of eternal
triumph and reward just ahead; his death chamber was the very gate of
heaven. He went fearlessly down into the dark valley where the shadows
gather with the posers of his mental vision, and his raptured eye caught
thrilling glimpses of the ineffable glory beyond. His last words,
utterances of triumph, he pillowed his head upon those grand and eternal
virtues of God's holy word. No clouds darkened his way, no terrors shook
his soul. He said all was well. He expressed a willingness to go. The
writer was frequently with him during his last illness. He constantly said
he was ready and willing to die. He breathed his last on the 23d of June
and his soul set at liberty and carried to heaven to strike hands with his
loved ones who had preceded him. His funeral services were conducted as was
his request, by Elders W. J. Fortenberry, Wm. H. Shilling and E. M.
Shilling. He was followed to his grave by a large concourse of neighbors,
children, relatives and friends, amid falling tears and mournful silence.
OBITUARY OF BRO. VALENTINE BROCK.
Bro. Brock was born in Alabama about A. D. 1825, and moved with his
parents to Pike County, Miss, in A. D. 1828, in which county he lived until
his death. Bro. Brock was married to Miss Barthana Ginn in 1845. He united
with the Silver Creek Church in August 1869. He withdrew his membership in
1873 to go into the constitution of Bogue Chitto Church, of which he
remained an honored member until his death, Feb. 22, A.D. 1881. Bro. Brock
was a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief, having had two sons killed;
and but a little while before he was called the Lord very suddenly called
his companion, which added greatly to the old man's sorrow. But the Lord
did not leave him long in loneliness. Although his trials were so great and
his sorrow so deep, his faith was firm and unwavering. It may truly be said
of him, that he has come through great tribulation and has washed his robe
and made it white in the blood of the lamb. Bro. Brock has gone where no
sorrow can come; his troubles are all over; his soul at rest with that
Saviour he loved.
Dearest brother, thou hast left us,
Here thy loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet thee
When the day of life is fled,
Then in heaven with joy to greet thee,
Where no farewell tear is shed.
Next we offer the obituary of Bro. Harvey. Bro. J. Harvey was born March
17th, 1847. He united with the Union Baptist Chruch Sept. 6th, 1880 and was
baptized by her present pastor, Elder S. R. Boone, Oct. 12th. Bro. Harvey
was afflicted for years with consumption and for eight weeks was confined to
his bed, during which time our pastor visited him often, talked, sang and
prayed for him. Bro. Harvey stated on his death bed he was willing to go;
that he was satisfied the change would be for the best, and exhorted his
friends to meet him in heaven. He died Jan. 8th, 1881, in the triumph of
faith. Although the next day was a cold, rainy day, there were many present
to show their respect at the funeral ceremonies, conducted by our pastor.
Jesus can make a dying bed
Feel soft as downy pillows are,
While on His breast we lean our heads
and breathe our lives out sweetly there.
We also offer the names of Bro. Charles Burch, of Bogue Chitto; E. G.
Haley, of Union' Lucy Jones, John Jones, Mariah Williams, Gilbert Pervis and
Jane Pervis, of New Zion; Allen Hayden of Mt. Nebo; Enoch Hines, of State
Line; B. Blunt, of Beulah; J. Banister of Pleasant Hill; Levi Bankston of
Terry's Creek; Daniel McDaniel, of Line Creek; Sister H. O. Graham, of
Spring Creek. We extend our sympathy and love to the bereaved ones, praying
God to receive them to his providence and comfort and sustain them by His
grace.
Respectfully submitted,
M. J. Pittman, Chairman
(No. 3.) Your committee appointed to labor in the interest of
Sabbath-schools at your last meeting, beg leave to report that they have
done some work in that direction, have organized and assisted in reviving
some Sabbath schools, though there seems to be some interest among the
churches, yet much remains to be done, and that great good may be
accomplished in the work by keeping up the plan you have adopted of sending
out Sabbath-school workers. Respectfully submitted,
C. B. Davis, Chairman

(No. 5) LETTER FROM MT. NEBO CHURCH
This is to certify that on Saturday, the 24th day of September last,
Elder W. W. Simmons did say in a speech made by him in the West Pearl River
Association at Erwin's Creek Church that no man could come up and say that
they had seen him drink since he had been a member of the church, and did
produce seven witnesses from his neighborhood to certify that the report was
false, and as Elder W. W. Simmons has charged C. F. Crawford as being the
man that circulated this false report, and being charged with so gross a
crime as that of circulating a falsehood on my brethren, I take the
opportunity of proving myself clear of the charge by the undersigned
witnesses, and witnesses will testify that the reports on Elder. W. W.
Simmons are true; that he has been seen drinking intoxicating drinks in
saloons and elsewhere during the last year. Witnesses: Bros. E. Ballard,
M. T. Alford, J. M. Carpenter, E. B. Dees, J. B. Dees, Sim Bennett, Thomas
Sanders, J. G. Carpenter, A. S. Stratham, Wm. J. Lewis, W. W. Ricks. Done

that he chose them in Christ before the foundation of the world, that he
calleth them with a holy and effectual calling and being justified alone

offering for Sin, hath by his most precious blood redeemed the elect from
under the curse of the law that they might be holy without blame before him
in love.
