Livingston Cemetery Slowly Falling Into River
Amite Baptist Church Congregation Alarmed Over River Problem
Denham Springs, May 6 - The Amite river which rises and falls
with each heavy rain has already taken six graves in the Amite
Baptist church cemetery, which is near here, and threatens to
take even more and possibly the church.
Residents of this small community which is 4 1/2 miles north of
Denham Springs are alarmed over the situation and are seeking to
get immediate aid to halt the inroads of the swollen river.
The Rev. R.L. Cook, church pastor, is hopeful that piling can be
laid along the bank to protect it or that engineers can work out
a plan to cut off a U in the river. The cemetery is at the turn
of the U.
In the last 48 hours a large liveoak was taken by the river and
in the last few days the six graves were washed away. There are
about 600 graves in the cemetery which dates to the early 1840's
when the church was founded. Under way now is a $100,000. brick
church building to replace the frame building. The cemetery is on
a bluff along the river and back of it are the old and new church
buildings. The old church will be razed when the new one is compl-
eted.
