SPORTS
The LSU Tiger freshmen wound up a three-week intensive drill and all is set
at the "Ole War Scule" for the regular fall practice which will get under way
the last week in August.
Tiger officials have arranged an attractive home schedule this fall, playing
six opponets on the LSU grid and only three tilts out of town.
LSU opens their '45 schedule on September 29 with Rice here, and follow with
Alabama, here, on October 6, Texas A & M here on October 13, Georgia U. at
Athens on October 20, Vanderbilt, here, October 27, and Ole Miss here on
November 3.
The Tigers follow with Mississippi State here on November 10, Georgia Tech at
Atlanta on November 17, and Tulane in New Orleans on December 1.
Quite a crew of frosh stars have been working out at LSU and with a galaxy of
holdovers the prospects for a good season are bright. Some of the frosh will
get a real test August 4 when they participate in the annual Prep All-Star
game in New Orleans. Coaches Butch Helveston and Ellis "Fuzzy" Brown will
handle the North squad.
The high schoolers at Catholic High, Baton Rouge High, and Istrouma are
slated to start their gridiron drills in late August and from all reports the
trio of prep schools expect good squads again this season.
Other sports on the home front find the Baton Rouge All-Stars still
undefeated in the state semi-pro baseball tournament, having defeated the
Bogalusa Gaylords, 8-0, and LaSalle Oilers of Goodpine, 4 to 2. Other teams
in the meet still unbeaten are Selman Field and Alexandria Air Base.
The Seven-Up Bottlers copped the city softball crown, downing Copoloymer
Rubber two games in the post-season playoffs.
The city golf tournament is in full swing and will be completed July 29. Ben
Downing,Jr., ex-LSU star, won the medalist honors with a two-over-par 75.
