SPORTS
The LSU Tiger track team wound up its regular season by tieing
for second in the Southern AAU track meet in New Orleans, which
was won by Tulane.
Johnny Yerger won the 440-yard dash, while Tommy Dickey placed
second in both the 100 and 220-yard dashes. James Ray Pickett won
the high jump.
The Tiger dashmen, Dickey and Yerger, entered the National inter-
collegiat meet at Milwaukee, Wis., and Dickey was fourth in the
100-yard dash while Yerger was fifth in the 440-yard run.
Although the summer sun is beaming down in full intensity, the
LSU holdover gridder went through an intensive two-week drill
with plenty of emphasis being made on the "T" formation. Currently
about 25 freshmen are being put through their paces by Head Coach
Bernie Moore.
Several changes in the Bengal coaching staff have been made with
Arthur "Slick" Morton replacing Jesse Fatheree as backfield coach,
and Gaynell Tinsley, former Tiger All-American, being assigned to
the end coaching job. "Pop" Stringer, ex-LSU tackle, will assist
with the line coaching job headed by Red Swanson.
The high schoolers have hung up their athletic togs for the summer
but will be out in late August for the fall grid practice sessions.
Ideal Cleaners and Mike & Tony's are waging a merry battle for the
American Legion Junior league crown, with district playoffs to get
under way about the middle of July.
In the semi-pro field the All-Stars, composed of most of the old
Esso gang, have won nine, lost four, and tied one. The state semi-
pro baseball tournament is slated to get under way July 20 with
nine teams entered.

TALK OF THE TOWN
T/S Stanley C. Farr (N. Hoosick, N.Y.), bombardier, has made 160
combat missions in the ETO and has 267 discharge points - do you
know anyone with more?
The annual election of the president of the Police Jury brought a
surprise defeat of Tom Stokes, last year's head, and the election
of Ernest Gass whom Stokes had previously defeated. The Advocate
states that the change was due to Stokes' advocating the enforcement
by the Parish of gambling laws.
You veterans of WW II think you can put it over veterans of all other
U.S. wars, but you will have to go some to beat the record of Civil
War veteran John Wray of Coons, La., who has just died at the age of
102.
Sugar has again been reduced for soft drinks, which are now so scarace
that unless you are on hand when a delivery is made, you just do with-
out. (Aren't you sorry for the stay-at-homes ?)
The unusual drouth that was causing the farmers so much concern has
finally been broken.
School children's waste-paper-collections resulted in Standard Heights
leading Bernard Terrace by a "nose"; with the other schools trailing
'way behind.
The SO Co. has just completed its 1,000,000,000th gallon of high octane
gasoline. Its employees back your 100% and did not stop production for
even one minute with strikes.
The WPB has authorized the contstruction by Our Lady of the Lake
Sanitarium of an addition for colored patients to cost over $200,000
and a $250,000 cafeteria by the Ethyl Corp.
Six local meat merchants have been indicted by the U.S. Commissioner
for over-charging.
"A" Card gasoline drivers (who are about the only drivers who have
really given up much) on June 21, got an increase from 2 gals. per
week to 3.
The ICC decision equalizing class rates over the nation, should be
increasingly helpful to the West and South and thus strengthen the
favorable possiblities of our section. The Baton Rouge area has just
started !
Though the Jap war is still on (and don't you know it! ), the
employees of Higgins in New Orleans held up for 10 days the production
of Higgins' boats. The cause of the strike is not clear, but since
the workers are back under the same terms as before the strike, the
complaints don't seem to have been very important.
A new industry started in Baton Rouge, when the General Chemical Co.,
a subsidary of Allied Chemical, began to make hydroflouric acid. It
started small, but owns 64 acres near the Y & M.V. roundhouse, so
evidently it expects to expand, as all other local industries have
done.
Iowa's ex-Senator Gillette was offered a Federal judgeship, with its
good pay, pleasant working conditions, and a pension on retirement.
He declined, as he had not practiced law for 25 years and did not feel
qualified. Have you ever heard of another politician admitting his
lack of qualifications and turning down such a "snap"? All honor to him!
When the A. & P. stores were about to be sued under the anti-trust law,
it's president loaned Brig. Gen. Elliott Roosevelt $200,000, who later
settled this debt for $4,000.
Two men and three women pulled off a slick one in Rider's Jewelry store
and 15 minutes after they had gone, employees found that a $7,500 tray
of diamonds had gone too. They are yet at large.
The Hy. Dept. has asked for permission to build a new bridge over the
bayou at Plaquemine, just east of the T. & P. bridge, which will lead
to Railroad Ave., as a through route.
