Douglas J. Nehrbass was appointed District Judge of the Fifteenth
Judicial District, Division "B", for the Parishes of Lafayette,
Acadia and Vermillion. The appointment was effective October 16,
1970, and the term expires December, 1971.
Judge Nehrbass was born on January 31, 1928 in Lafayette, Louisiana,
the son of Frederick J. Nehrbass and Marie A. Mouton. He resided in
Lafayette from date of birth up to and including the present time.
His father, Frederick J. Nehrbass, is a prominent architect who is
71 years of age and semi-retired, having practiced architecture in
this area for over 45 years. His mother is a native of Lafayette,
is 70 years old and is President of the Lafayette Museum Association.
On November 4, 1949, Judge Nehrbass married Peggy Dufour, a native of
Lafayette and they have become the parents of six children: Camille N.
Meagher, now married to T.M. Meagher, and Douglas J., Jr., Elizabeth,
Nancy, Cathrine Nehrbass, and Frederick J. Nehrbass, III (1958 - 1968).
Judge Nehrbass graduated from Jefferson Military College in Natchez,
Mississippi in 1944, received his B.A. Degree from U.S.L. (S.L.I.) in
1948, and received his LL.B. (now J.D.) from L.S.U. in 1949 at the age
of 21. He was admitted to practice in 1949 and started practicing in
Lafayette, where remained enegaged in practice until appointed to the
Judiciary.
Judge Nehrbass was President of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association,
1968 - 1969; Member of the Board of Governors of La. Trial Lawyers
Association, 1963 - 1964 and 1968 - 1969; Member of Committee on Cont.
Legal Education of La.; Bar Association, 1968 - 1970; and Associate
Editor of American Trial Lawyers Associatin Journal in 1962.
Judge Nehbrass' hobbies include hunting, reading and the breeding of
Labrador Retrievers and running them in Field Trials.
