Winn Parish Youths Liberated
Jimmie Harrell, Radioman 1/c, U.S.M.
If I seem giddy, its because Ive gone from one extreme sorrow to
an extreme joy, Mrs. Emma Harrell of Winnfield said after learning
Tuesday of the safety of her son, Jimmie Harrell, Radioman 1/c, U.S.M.,
whose death was officially announced Saturday by the Navy Department.
Mrs. Harrells last telegram from the Navy department is quoted: I
am pleased to inform you that your son, Jimmie Harrell, Radioman First
Class, U.S.N., previously reported dead, is now reported to be alive.
He was held on an island and liberated by allied forces. Undoubtedly he
will communicate with you at an early date concerning his welfare and
whereabouts. The anxiety caused by previous message is deeply
regretted. Vice-Admiral Randall Jacobs, Chief of Naval Personnel.
Jimmies naval base was at Lehavre, France. His last letters to
his family were dated March 8, and the message received by his mother on
March 17 stated that he was missing in action on March 9.
Five years of service in the Navy has given Jimmie varied
experiences in almost every part of the world, excepting those of
Germany, but his most recent experience on the little island off the
coast of France will no doubt be his most vivid memory.
His brothers, Sgt. Eli Harrell, stationed in Canada, Sgt. Hovy
Harrell, stationed in Hawaii, Pat Harrell, S 1/c, stationed somewhere in
South America and Pfc. Marvin Harrell, stationed in the East Indies,
have all been notified of his safety.
