Town Council Proceedings
Benton, Louisiana Dec.20, 1897
The Town Council of theTown of Benton met in call session this day.
Present: R.B. Hill, Mayor; J.M. Belcher, B.F. Oneal, Joe Benjamin and
L.G. Smith; T.N. Braden, Secretary. Quorum present.
The reading of the minutes of the last meeting, upon motion duly
seconded, was waived.
It was moved and seconded that the Mayor of the Town of Benton be
authorized to contract with an Electric Light Co. to be established at
Benton, LA. to put in 6 arc lights at such places and such elevation as
may be designated by a committee to be appointed. Said lights to run
from first dark until 12 oclock m., at the sum and price of $200 per
annum; $100 of which is to be paid to said Company when the lights are
in successful operation, the balance to be paid in equal monthly
installments, first payment beginning 6 months after said lights are in
operation. carried.
Moved and seconded that the council now adjourn until next regular
meeting.
At a regular meeting of Dixie Lodge No. 32, K of P, held in Benton on
the 15th instant, the following officers were elected for 1898:

Prelate, I.H. Martin; Keeper Records and Seals, W.J. Dawson; Master of
Exchequer, Dr. W.M. Abney; Master of Finance, J.L.Pyron; Master at Arms,

Mrs. J.W. Raab of Plain Dealing, is the guest of Mrs. I.H. Martin.
Miss Dora Hickman, of Fillmore, was the guest of Mrs. J.H. Osbeen
Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Larkin, Mrs. and Mrs. L.G. Smith and Miss Maud Larkin
attended the marriage of Mr. Robert Huddleston and Miss Emma Larkin, on
the 18th instant.
Rev. J.R. Roy, pastor of North Bossier Circuit during this year, has
been transferred to Texas. He left Plain Dealing on the 15th for
Bryson, Texas where he will preach next year.
Mr. Robert L. Huddleston and Miss Emma Larkin were married at the
residence of the bride's father, Mr. Thos. P. Larkin, in Ward 5 on the
18th instant; Rev. J.W. Griffin officiating. The Banner wishes them
much happiness.
Married, at the residence of the bride, in Dean's Point, on last Sunday
evening at 3 o'clock, by Elder J.S. Campbell, Mr. W.H. McCaleb and Mrs.
A.E. Hammett. A number of friends were present, and a wedding feast was
spread and enjoyed.
Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Atkins, of Knox Point, celebrated the fourteenth
anniversary of their marriage on the 4th instant. Mr. Atkins is a
deservedly popular citizen and successful merchant and planter. May he
and his good wife "live long and prosper".
Mr. Wm. Burch, of Fillmore, this Parish, and Miss Blanche Swaggerty of
Lufkin, Texas were married in Lufkin on the 18th instant. The bride and
groom arrived in Haughton last Thursday, where they will make their
home. Miss Emmie Perrin and Mr. Murff Bledsoe, of Fillmore, attended
the wedding.
Cards are out announcing the approaching marriage of Miss Eilian Fuqua
Thomas, the accomplished daughter of Capt. S.M. Thomas, to Hon. Joseph
William Warren, of New Lewisville, Arkansas. The happy event will take
place on the 29th day of this month at 4 o'clock at the Methodist Church
in Benton.
DIED
On December 11, 1897, at her residence near Bellevue, Jessie Lorene
Hooker, wife of E.B. Lockey, aged 29 years and 2 days. She was a member
of the Methodist Church. She lived a consistent member until she left
this world for the world beyond. She expressed that she was ready - her
way was bright for the glory land. She leaves 5 little children to
mourn her loss, with her husband.
