If you have submitted a family tree to
Ancestry.com,
you should know of
the change about to be implemented by them. The
Family Trees that have
been donated to Ancestry for free distribution to
other researchers are
about to be sold by subscription: the OneWorldTree
Preview cost will be
$49.95 for 14 months. If you'd prefer that your
information was not
sold, there is a link below which will take you to a
set of instructions
on opting out by deleting your tree.
After clicking on the link and arriving at the page,
click on "What's a
preview?" near the top of the page.
Read thoroughly and then click on "View our
checklist" (which appears on
#3).
Among other things, you will see the following
sentence: "If for any
reason you do not want your tree to be part of the
new OneWorldTree
service, you must delete it from the Ancestry World
Tree database by
tentatively May 21, 2004." This is the link:
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/
Since this will be of
no interest to the folks on the list who don't have
trees at Ancestry,
please direct any discussion or questions to me at:

Subject: DISCLAIMER: Ancestry is not charging for
regular searches!
so now we wait and see what else developes???? alice
Ancestry is *not* charging for access to trees or
selling trees: access
will remain free from both the RootsWeb and Ancestry
side as it has
always been.
What Ancestry is offering for an extra charge is
access to a special
search engine to search the trees for you. Folks can
still search the
trees manually or browse the trees for free the same
way they always
have.
Think of it as a research assistant: you can hire
someone to help you
look for your ancestors, or you can research
yourself for free. Hiring a
human research assistant doesn't sell them the data
being researched, or
change the rules so that only they are allowed to
look.
That's essentially what it is, except that it's
computerized, not human.
