As the LADATA mailing list was created for "submission" of data to the
USGenWeb archives, most of what should be on this list is about 20 or so
"uploading" file managers. So you don't really have much exposure.
You will have better luck with putting your queries and request on the
Louisiana-Roots mailing list or the "new" LGHS (Louisiana Gen & Hist Soc.)
mailing list. The LaRoots has over 600 subscribers and as last count (in
operation only 3 days!) the LGHS had 80 and climbing steadily.
Just a suggestion.

After several years of searching for my John RANDOLPH, I finally found out
that he died in 1822 in East Baton Rouge Parish, La.
Now, at last ... I finally have a chance to go to Baton Rouge but will only
have a few hours to find Wills and Deeds and whatever else I can find in a
hurry.
Can someone PLEASE help me with where I might find these kinds of documents?
Are they in a Library, Courthouse, Historical Society ?? Are they accessible
??
I would appreciate any help you can give me to make this undertaking
possible !

Married November 1 st. A. D. 1874
John J. Roberson and Helen May

J. Q. Adams & M. A. Roberson was
Married Oct. 10 A D 1896
Nov
(Oct. is written over Nov. some confusion at that time as to correct month/
strike out appears on the 9 in 1896-unknown if it is a 9 or a 6-This refers to
the marriage of Mary Adda Roberson. Mary Adda was born May 18, 1881,
therefore the correct marriage year would be 1898)
E. C. Dodson & E. A. Roberson was
Married Dec 27 th A. D. 1899
(it appears that E. A. Roberson is the same Annie Euginia Roberson listed in
the Bible as being born March 23, 1880. Since she was called Ginia it is
likely that the initials were inverted in this document.)
Markus A. Farrington & Nora N. Roberson

Robert E. Matlock & Rosey Lilie Roberson
was Married Dece. 23 A. D. 1903

appear on the 25 the first inscription appears to have been 5 and was later

was Married Jan 23 A. D. 1910
(Gidie W. is listed as Gideon Washington in the Family Bible under Births)
Sam H Hoss & Violia Roberson
Was married Married March 17 1912
(The inscription does read married Married apparently the M was not
capitalized and the writer did not have an eraser so the word married was
rewritten with a capital letter. This lack of erasing also explains the
strike
outs in dates on previous inscriptions.)
Gideon W. Roberson &
Ruth Rogers Married Jan
23 1910
(This is a repetition of the Gidie W. Roberson and Ruth Rogers marriage.)
Luther Holland & Ola Roberson
Married Aug. 19 th 1917
Sam H. Hoss & Violia Roberson
was Married Mar. 17 1912
(This is a repetition of the previous inscription for Sam H and Violia.)
Sam H. Hoss & Myra Mable James was married Sept. 20 1934.
(Strike out appears on the 9 the first inscription appears to have been 8.
This
marriage appears to have been the marriage of Sam H. Hoss Jr. the child of
Sam H. Sr. and Violia Roberson. The birth of Sam Jr. is listed as May 12,
1913 and the Sr. Sam was listed as being born Sept. 18, 1887.)
Luther W. Holland & Ola Roberson was
married Aug 19 1917. 3 th Sunday
(This is a repetition of the previous inscription; with the addition of the 3
th
Sunday. th is often used in dates rather then the use of st or rd.)

mother of all of his children was Ruth Rogers Roberson who died in 1928.)

(Various math problems are found on the following page. These math
problems appear to be dealing with dates and ages.)
(Other inscriptions appear throughout the Bible. A large X is often found on
chapters and verses. At times pages are well worn with corners turned down;
smudges are found on what appear to be favorite verses. Several pages are
marked with hair clippings some are blonde and very fine as if they were
from a child. Other hair clippings are moderate brown with a hint of auburn.
One
clipping is a braided length of brown to auburn hair about the double width
of a pencil lead tied with blue yarn. Other pages contain portions of pressed
flowers, leaves, and cedar.

The spelling or misspelling of the Francis Adams Rogers branch may be due
to the spelling on the tombstone of my grandmother Ruth Rogers Roberson,
until 1993 when we erected my fathers stone did we notice that the spelling
of Ruth Rogers Roberson was incorrect and had been since her stone was placed
there. (Ruth Rogers Roberson died in 1928) This was corrected in 1993 with
a new stone and the correct spelling. The spelling of ROGERS for the family
of Francis Adams Roger born 1807 is ROGERS as documented by the writings and
transcriptions of the Francis Adams Bible by the his grandson Joseph D.
Rogers, Jr.
Hi, KaCee,
I don't know if I can help you out or not, but the spellings of many French
names in Louisiana remained in the older version of the language which dated
to the time of the settlement of their ancestors. Being tri-lingual
(English, French, Spanish), I have run into similar problems before.
One possibility is that since the sound "eh" (as in "lend") can be formed by
different letter combinations - "ai", "ei", "è", and "es", and the final "s"
of French words is not pronounced, the name could be pronounced like the
French word "verses", which would sound like "VEHRZ". I apologize that I do
not have a font file with phonetics in it, but I think you can get the idea.
So you might start by dropping the "i" in your search. If that yields no
results, try changing the letter combinations. One thing for which French
notaries in Louisiana were notorious was writing names the way they sounded
rather than the actual spelling. They also translated or translitterated
foreign names into French.
If this doesn't help in your search, please write me privately and I'll try
to think of some other linguistic ideas to help you with your search.
Regards,
Bill Austin
Hello List,
I have a major problem that I'm hoping someone out there can help me
figure out. My Great Grandmother's maiden name on her marriage
certificate is spelled VEIRSES. I haven't been able to find that
spelling anywhere else. Family oral history says that she was French
and from Louisiana (she was married there, in New Orleans). Does anyone
have any ideas what her name was if VEIRSES is mis-spelled, maybe
something that sounds close? I've looked on a French website, but
unfortunately it's in French. I been stuck for what seems like forever.
Thanks,
KaCee
