The Era Leader 10 Sept 1997
Mr. O.V. Smith, a native of Franklinton and a resident of Mesquite, TX, died
on Aug 2 while doing what he loved best, riding a cutting horse.
He had dedicated his life and natural talent to training and showing cutting
horses. He was well known, well liked and respected in the Appaloosa Horse
Club, Texas Appaloosa Cutting Horse Association and the Appaloosa Cutting
Horse Association. He owned, trained and showed Ima Colida OLena better
known as Snoopy to several World Championships. This amazing little horse
has given O.V. great joy as he contiues to fulfill O.V.s dream of becoming
the greatest of all round cow horse under teh guiding hand of fellow horseman
and friend, Clint Haverty. He earned the right to the cover story of the
Appaloosa Journal in the cow horse issue after capturing the Appaloosa World
Championship in Jr. Cutting and the maturity on Ks Quizote, Sr. Cutting on
Sirs Expression and Snoopy and O.V.s wife, Cherye won the Non-Pro, all in
the same year. O.V. also trained the leading NCHA money earned Appaloosa,
Little Peppy Zan Man better known as Peanut, a Snoopy baby. His knowledge
and ability has earned him the respect he deserves in the Appaloosa industry
as well as AQHA and APHA. Mr. Smith has a special gift when it came to
buying, selling, training and showing cutting horses. This same gift gave him
talent with the next love of his life, meeting and making friends. He loved
sharing his stories, telling his jokes and making those that had the privilege
of knowing him laugh and desire his friendship. He was a great horseman and
even a better friend.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Cherye; one son, O.V. Smith, Jr.; two
daughters, Judy Compton and Teresa Fisher; his many grandchildren; two
sisters, Verna McElveen and Nadine Fahnestock; and his many friends and loved
