I am hoping that a NUNN researcher may have also researched this CORNELIUS
line. The father of Buelah was Franklin F. CORNELIUS. Franklin's brother
was Lafayette CORNELIUS, father of my grandfather, William Frederick
CORNELIUS who served in the KY Legislature representing Laurel and
Rockcastle counties. He was elected in Nov of 1917
The grandfather of both my William Frederick and Buelah, wife of Governor
Louis NUNN, was Andrew CORNELIUS who died in Jackson co in 1896. After
years of efforts, I have still been unable to find the father of Andrew. I
"suspect" John who was in the 1820 Clay co census or John who md Rachel
BUNDS in Madison co in 1806(I do not believe that the John in Clay is the
John who md Rachel BUNDS because of the ages of the family members in the
1820 census). It may also be Elihu CORNELIUS who md Nancy HENSON in Knox co
KY in 1804, but I believe that this family moved to Hardeman co TN before
Perhaps some NUNN researchers can come to my rescue?
Also it is reported that while Buelah was KY's First Lady that she was
involved in some quite important projects to preserve the history of KY. If
anyone has a list of these projects or a bio on Buelah, I would greatly
appreciate such information. Would also like a list of her descendants.
Buelah was married first to Joe Bill ASPLEY.
I have included Owsley county list because I understand that the location of
John CORNELIUS on Sturgeon Creek in 1820 is now in Owsley county.
Thank you so much.

Now come on! John CORNELIUS family in the 1820 Clay co census living in
Sturgeon Creek area that is now Owsley co. had 11, that is eleven persons,
in the household. John had been on Clay co tax list since 1815. Surely
some of these 11 people got out there and multiplied and have a few hundred
descendants, at least one or two of whom are researching their roots.
Somehow this family is related to the CORNELIUS family that shows up on
1840 Laurel co tax lists and 1850 Laurel co census and then 1860 Jackson co
censuses. But how? Are the Whitley co CORNELIUS' connected? Family lore has
it that they were in Pulaski co before Clay co, but I have no evidence of
Most of you know I have been trying for a long time to find parents of
my Andrew CORNELIUS, b KY abt 1813 and died in Jackson co KY in 1896(Obit in
Mountain Echo). I really appreciate all the help in the past and keep
hoping for that one big breakthrough that perhaps there is a descendant has
found something that I have been unable to find...a deed, a will, a marriage
or death that can make the magic connection to the puzzle. Is this the
Hi, I've updated my website again and changed it all around. I have
documented all my sources and added over 1000 names. I have also added on
my report page cemetary location and baptism dates. Within the next couple
of weeks I plan to update again. I have still over 1000 names to put in
and am hoping to be able to upload all my notes but I still have to type
them in. That might take a while since I have a whole box of notes to type
in. So don't forget to check back. If you find any errors please let me
know. I'm sure there are some in there somewhere.
Also, Dehart researchers--could you check out my site especially on the
Gabrial and Jessie Dehart that there is so much discrepencies on. Let me
know how you think they fit in and why. I would like to keep this
documented on whatever you think the lineage is. Also, some of you believe
we descend from Balthazer Dehart. Let me know your opinion on that. The
way my lineage is setup was the very first way I received it. I am going
to contact that person also to see if he has found anymore proof on this
lineage. I know he said he had been researching Deharts for over 20 years.
If anyone is interested--we are having a Sargent/Dehart reunion on Aug. 1st
in Ashland, Ky. If interested email me.
My first e-mail to the mail list of Owsley County was returned because
my address to you had a fatal error. So I probably put a dash where
there wasn't suppose to be one. Hope I have it right this time.

Seek information on Jesse Clark in Owsley County, Kentucky. He was born
circa 1863 (according to census). In 1880 census he was married to Malissa
Lynch; in 1900 census to Sophia Hundley. Anything on Jesse, his parents,
siblings or wives would be greatlyy appreciated. Jesse is supposed to be
buried in Tabitha Scott's cemetery in Owsley County, Kentucky. If anyone can
confirm this, please do. Jesse's parents are listed as being from Virginia.

Yes you had sent most of that information. It is really interesting. I was
hoping that one or more of these GUM researchers had decided to investigate
the ancestry of Elizabeth CORNELIUS. I always try to investigate the
females in my line as well, especially those who are direct ancestors. I
have had much luck going back to Magna Charta with Mary Belle THOMPSON from
Pulaski co who md my Lafayette CORNELIUS in 1880(they were in Jackson co
1880 census as well).
>From the location of the CORNELIUS and GUM families in the Sturgeon Creek
area close to the BRAY family, it appears that these CORNELIUS ancestors of
mine came from VA. I have a BRAY/CORNELIUS marriage in Middlesex co VA.
Marriages of some Virginia Residents 1607-1800, V. 1, Genealogical
Ann m. richard Gaines
John m. 27 December 1772 Sarah Acra. Christ Church
Srah m. 30 May 1773 Jane Bray. Christ Church
(first name was spelled Srah as shown)
What Wulfeck showed as Srah was transcribed Siah in the Christ Church
Register publication. This could be Sion or Zion CORNELIUS
It wouldn't surprise me a bit that the John CORNELIUS who showed up in the
Sturgeon Creek area of Clay county on the tax lists in 1815 and is in the
1820 census is the son of this Siah, Sion or Zion CORNELIUS and Jane BRAY.
Just have to fill in the hole of information that keeps me from making the
connection. Perhaps the BRAYs, GUMs, PHILLIPS, GAINES, ACREE or
descendants of other families in the area will have some info. I have
certainly been stumped.
I know there were BRAY's in the area from the text of the following land
land grant to James HUGHES, dated 8-12-1795, Madison County, Kentucky,
granting 500 acres on Sturgeon Creek, a branch of the Kentucky, adjoining
Joseph Bray's (?) survey.
John CORNELIUS dissappears from the Clay co tax lists in 1825 and evidently
died before 1826 when the following land warrant was issued:
KENTUCKY LAND WARRANTS*
Patsey Cornelius, 50 acres, surveyed 3-2-1826, Clay County, on Rockhouse
and Sturgeon Creek (Book T, Page 244)
I believe this Martha Patsey to be the mother of Elizabeth who md Stephen
GUM and John CORNELIUS to be the father of Elizabeth, but cannot prove
A Zion CORNELIUS appears on the tax list in 1833 with William CORNELIUS who
md in Clay co in 1822 also. I believe Zion to be the brother of Elizabeth
and William and a James(Jess, you told me about a James CORNELIUS in the
1817 Clay co court records) that shows up for the first time on the tax list
with William and John in 1824. Zion and my Andrew show up on the Laurel co
tax list in the Rockcastle River area in 1840 where their descendants still
live in good numbers today on both the Laurel and Jackson county sides of
Big mystery and I have been years trying to just make a connection back to
VA. My Andrew in 1880(called Ambrose CORNELIUS on this one for some reason)
census of Jackson county does state that his mother was born in VA, but I
cannot tell where he says his father was born.
By the way these McQUEENs are my ancestors as well. A descendant of the Rev
War Vet John McQUEEN, Mary BURN(H)AM( dau ofJohn BURNAM and Lousia FLINCHUM;
John was son of Matilda McQUEEN and Dr. Edwin William BURNHAM; Matilda was
dau of Thomas Abe McQUEEN and Nancy TINCHER; Thomas Abe was son of John
McQUEEN and Polly ALLENDALE), married my grandfather William Frederick
CORNELIUS, son of Lafayette, in 1910 in Laurel co.
