I am a descendant of William Chapman and Sarah Skirvin. The information I
have is limited and dead ends in Loudoun County, VA as far as documentation
goes at present on the Skirvin line.
Sarah Skirvin born ca. 1796 in Virginia died after 1850 in Lusby's Mill, KY.
She married William Chapman born ca. 1794 in England (immigrated in 1801 on
Roebuck - arrived October 1801 in Philadelphia, PA) naturalized citizen in
Owen County, KY 1848. They were married on March 29, 1806, in Fayette
They moved by 1807 to Hamilton County, OH where they showed up on the tax
lists and lived until 1814 when they moved back to Kentucky settling in
Lusby's Mill in Owen County, KY. They lived there until their death. They
appear on the 1850 Owen County census.
Sarah Skirvin is the daughter of John Skirvin, Sr. and his wife Mary Ann
(unknown). Recently I have seen references to her as Mary Ann Thompson, but
have no idea of where this information came from originally. I have contacted
people who don't know the source.
John Skirvin, Sr. appears on the list of Tithables in Loudoun County, VA from
1772 until 1785. He lived in Cameron Parish. In 1787 he first appears on the
Fayette County Tax rolls. From there he was in Harrison County, Pendleton
County and eventually Grant County, KY. He died and left a will in Grant
County which was probated in April 1832.
John Skirvin is theorized to have come from Maryland but no conclusive link
has been documented yet with the Maryland Skirvin line. He probably came to
Loudoun County, VA from Maryland across the Potomac River. He was associated
with the family of Ignatius Wheeler and the Wheeler family came from
Frederick County, MD and Prince William County, VA.
I would like to know what you have on this family.
