I have recently stumbled upon some possible leads for my HAMILTON/HAMBLETON
line, and I am hoping that someone will be able to help me straighten this out.
I have the following:
Samuel Luther Hamilton (b: Abt. 1820 in KY) married 28 Jan 1846 in Nicholas
Co., KY to Mary Grant Eward (b: 16 Nov 1819 in Nicholas Co., KY). They had the
Samuel Luther Hamilton (b: 10 Feb 1847 in Nicholas Co., KY - d: Aug 1900 in
Buffalo, NY) married to Elizabeth Sophia Wheeler
John Hamilton b: 1849 in KY
Edward Hamilton b: 1855 in IN
Mary Hamilton b: 1857 in IN
I have found two possibilities for parents for Samuel Luther. Both were
married in Bourbon Co, KY in 1797
1. Samuel Hamilton & Jane Swinney
2. Samuel Hamilton & Mary Anderson
I do not know what became of Samuel & Mary Anderson.
At this point I am guessing that Samuel HAMILTON & Jane SWINNEY (possible
children: Robert, Edward, & William) are my Samuel Luther's parents. I know
that Samuel & Jane were living in Nicholas Co, KY. in 1820. Jane is listed
living there without Samuel in 1840, and there is a entry for a bill of sale
mentioning a Samuel Hamilton deceased as of 1827. In the 1830 Nicholas Co, KY
census there is a William HAMILTON, with an older woman who could be his
widowed mother Jane. I also found a William HAMILTON/HAMBLETON from Bourbon
Co, KY. I don't know when or where he was born, but he died in Bourbon Co, KY
about 1800. His wife was Isabelle and had sons named Alexander, Thomas, Robert
& Samuel. This could be my Samuel Luther's grandfather (father of Samuel
married to Jane Swinney).
Is anyone familiar with any of these people or families? Any information,
suggestions or advice would be greatly welcomed. I have written to the
Nicholas County Historical Society, and am still awaiting a response, but have
not yet written to Bourbon Co, KY.
Also, will the Bourbon Co, KY courts accept requests for will look-ups via
snail mail? I would like to try and get a copy of the above mentioned William
HAMILTON/HAMBLETON's will. It was dated 29 March 1800 and probated Jan 1801 in
Bourbon Co, KY (book B, pg. 112).
The Goszka's report they had contacted the Nicholas Co Historical
Society but had not yet received a reply. Mrs. Anabel Burden, who works
with that Society is descended from a Hamilton family that was in
Nicholas Co early on. She may be able to help you with information when
you do get a reply from the Society.
I corresponded with Mrs. Burden some years ago when I was inquiring
about a James Hamilton who married Margaret "Pega" Ray in Nicholas Co in
1819. Since then I have found this James and Margaret Hamilton in the
1850 census in Scott Co IN living in the same neighborhood where
Margaret 's parents Francis and Deborah Ervin Ray bought original tract
land in 1819.
