I have been tracing my 4th great James Ray family in Nicholas Co KY
for a good many years, and John's names rang a bell with me, also. We
always were told our Rays came from Pennsylvania, and I know many of the
Nicholas Co people did come from there. This James Ray's wife was
Margaret Morrison whose father's will was found in Pennsylvania.
I have looked at my marriage records and find that in Bourbon Co KY
dated May 1805 Betsy Turner (Elizabeth?) to David Byers. Then in
Nicolas Co KY I find Betsey Hamilton maried Samuel Ham 2 February 1819,
married by John Barnett. I do not find a marriage for Betsy Turner to a
Hamilton, but I may have missed it.
In Kentucky Records, Vol II, by Ardery, under Bourbon Orders, page
106 I find under March Court 1803, Francis Ray appointed guardian to
Sarah, Peggy, Jas., Robt., and Elizabeth Turner, infant orphans of Jesse
Turner, decd. Sureties Wm. Henry and Robt. Hamilton.
In other Nicholas Co KY marriages I find more information on the
Turner children--James Hamilton to Peggy Turner 4 Oct. 1810 by W. B.
Stone with John Hamilton bond; Sally (Sarah?) Turner to William Elliot 7
Dec 1808 with David Byers bond.
Another James Hamilton married Jane McCoy 5 Nov 1818 and this family
is written up in Decatur Co Indiana history. Several Nicholas Co KY
families settled in Decatur Co IN in early years, including my 2nd great
(another) James Ray who had married Jane Morris in Nicholas Co 5 October
1819 md by John Rankin. They and his father, Francis Ray and family
were in Scott Co IN census in 1820.
Yet another James Hamilton married Margaret Ray 16 Jan 1817 in
Nicholas Co. This Margaret Ray was daughter of my 3rd great Francis Ray
and his wife Deborah Ervin/Irvin who were married in Rowan Co NC before
the family moved to Kentucky. I have found this James/Margaret Hamilton
family on the census in Scott Co IN living near the Francis Ray family.
I have wondered whether there is a connection between the Turner
family and the Ray family, for James Ray bought 500 A from George
Stockton in 1790 when the land was still in Bourbon Co. Later he sold
several tracts including l00 acres to his son Francis Ray and 75 acres
to Jesse Turner.
Several years ago I had correspondence with a Hamilton researcher
who at that time still lived in Nicholas Co. She told me that the James
Hamilton who married Margaret Ray and moved to Indiana did not seem to
belong to her Hamilton family. If any of this helps let me know and I
can dig through that other Hamilton correspondence.
