Welcome to the administrative list for the Kentucky Vital Records Project.
Many months ago, I began putting together a large number of death
certificates and set out to begin posting as many as I could gather on my
personal website. About the time I hit 1,000 death certificates, I found
that Sherri Hall and Nancy Trice were dreaming of having a Death Certificate
special project as part of Kentucky GenWeb. We began brainstorming and the
Kentucky Vital Records Project began to evolve. I have to say--I couldn't
have done it without them. They are terrific, dedicated genealogists and
have worked tirelessly with me (and we're all still friends)!!
I'm so excited to see it almost ready to launch!!
If you are receiving this message, you have either subscribed to this list,
or expressed an interest in helping. There are now 40 subscribers to the
list and it is becoming impossible for me to personally answer e-mail
messages. Needless to say, my hands are more than full!
Many of you have been working hard on the project--many others are waiting
for the right job description. Believe me, an assignment that is right for
you will show up shortly.
STATUS OF THE PROJECT:
About 40,000 index pages have been uploaded to the site in the last 24 hours
(no you won't be able to see them yet!)
We have split about half of the files we need broken down and have doubled
our volunteer force in the last 24 hours. There is light at the end of the
tunnel.
Finishing touches are being but on the transcription area of the site, with
testing scheduled to begin tomorrow.
500 digital images of death certificates have been processed and uploaded.
Another 7,000 will have work begun on them in the next few days.
The project will likely be officially announced to the public sometime early
next week.
I would love to give you a sneak peek to all of the site, but had to remove
the support pages that would make most things display correctly. They would
interfere with the code you are capturing from your files.
We are still hoping to have an initial launch of the site in testing mode on
Feb 14; and hope to have the kinks all worked out and the site working
smoothly by March 1.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
I will begin posting, within the next 24 hours, descriptions of various jobs
we need help with. Transcribers and proofers will be among those we'll need
shortly.
Volunteers, please help each other on this list so I don't have to
personally answer every question. Tom, Kathy, Pat, Josh--you all have
experience and can help the new splitters.
Thanks so much for your support of my dream,
Sheryl Slaughter
