Thanks so much to everyone who sent me possible solutions regarding my
inability to save an image from the web as jpg.
Even if you had not had trouble in this area yourself, I was able to use
your comments to narrow the possibilities and find a 'workaround'.
If you are using AOL and wish to continue doing so, this might help. For the
benefit of the archives:
My present computer setup uses Windows XP with AOL 9.0 as my internet
service provider. (Previously I used AOL 7.0 with Win98 and Microsoft Picture-It,
and had no problems.)
I found that I could save images as jpg if I accessed my email from the
Internet Explorer site. Take it from me, the easiest way to do this is to change
your personal home page from AOL to somewhere else. This does NOT mean that
you have to drop your account with AOL!
In my case I took advantage of the free home page and email account provided
by my computer's manufacturer. However, Internet Explorer itself will also
provide you with a free home page.
So far it is working out just fine.
A few of you told me that you weren't familiar with the Irfanview image
editing program. If you don't already have a good enhancement program, this is a
free download from
_http://www.irfanview.com/_ (
http://www.irfanview.com/)
You will have to open an image saved on your hard drive before the program
will display the tools and options available.
The easiest way to zoom is via the magnifying glass buttons. Just click on
the + glass to enlarge; each click enlarges once again.
The easiest way to clear up an image is to click on: (top of screen) Image,
click on Enhance colors...
even though these are in black and white. Try all of the controls presented
on the small screen that pops up. Hey, as long as you don't save anything,
it doesn't matter what you do to an image, right?
Also under Image, try 'sharpen'.
If you haven't used this before, you'll be surprised at how effective it can
be. Using 'Negative' can sometimes help.
I'm sure others have their favorite areas to use - these work well for me.
You're welcome to ask questions, or offer suggestions.
Breathing a huge sigh of relief,
Janice
