My aunt Ellie and I recently visited Clay County and we had a wonderful time! We got to spend 3 days researching in the county records as well as at the fabulous Clay County Genealogical & Historical Society library. Everyone we met was so friendly and helpful, and we especially enjoyed our visit with Charles and the staff at the Society! Our search for our Bolin, Baker and Bales ancestral families was very productive! We are still sorting and analyzing all the treasures we found.
We wanted to thank everyone at the Society for all the assistance in our research and for making us flatlanders feel so welcome in beautiful Clay county!
John Wise (1831-abt.1909), my gggrandfather, authorized by the State Board of Health in 1901 to practise medicine after having been engaged in the practise of medicine
in this state for thirty-two years and having passed a examination before the board, always claimed to have been born in Clay County, Kentucky in 1831. He married
Margaret Sparks (1833-1906) in 1854, Wolfe, Co. They had eight children: William Patrick b. 1855, Wolfe Co., Mary b. 1857, drowned age 3, Harvey Dyer b. 1860, Estill Co., twins Damaris (Edwards) and Lewis Milton b. 1865 Johnson Co,. America (Hall) b. 1867, Floyd Co., Hannah (Sparks) b. 1870. Estill Co., and Tobias Emalcum b. 1871, Estill Co.
After years of searching for anything about him prior to 1854 I have come to believe that he is the son of Mary Wise, b. 1810, who was given consent to wed George Milton Pigg by William Graham b. 1786, Georgia. Mary Wise married Geo. M. Pigg in 1833 in Clay County. Who the father of John Wise was I do not know. But if Geo. Pigg was his step-father, he was living in that household with his half-brothers and sisters at the time of the 1850 census of Clay County, Ky. John, born 1831, was listed in the home of Geo. and MaryPigg. (Mistakenly named by the census taker as William and Mary)
May 27, 1851, John Wise wed Syrenna Ponder (1831-1853) Sadly they had two sons who died, John H. born in Clay County, March 31, 1852, died at 17 days and James P. born in Owsley Co. June 6, 1853 died at birth. Syrenna died at the home of her sister in Wolfe Co. of childbed fever Sept. 17, 1953.
