Owsley was formed in 1843 from Clay, Estill and Breathitt Counties. If you
knew the nearby landmarks, rivers or townships, it would be easier to
determine which county applies. Owsley lies just north of Clay and adjoins
it. Breathitt is north and east of Clay--adjoining Owsley. Hope this

So many people helped me a few months ago in my search for James Hughes of McMinn County,TN and later, Clay County, KY. I never did find his parents but thought he must be related to the John Hughes who received a pension in McMinn County for Rev. war service in 1832. I promised after I got John Hughes pension records, I would send any new info. Well, they came and disappointedly, they shed no new light. No additional info - just the same as was in the extracts that follows; John Hughes, s1536, North Carolina Line. Was at the Watuga river, also served at St. Clair's defeat. Applied 9-05-1832, McMinn County, Tennessee, age 80. He lived in Burke County, North Carolina at enlistment and later moved to Blount County, Tennessee, then to McMinn County, Tennessee. Rachel Blevins was a witness but no relationship given. No evidence of a widow. If anyone has a clue regarding this family, I sure would love to know it. I also received copies of James Hughes' son, Caleb Starr H!
ughes of his service in the civil war. It also did not reveal any new facts regarding the family. Anyone have any suggestions where to go next?
I'm new at posting to KYCLAY-L so hope I get it ok. I would appreciate it if
someone would do a 1880 census lookup for the family of Felix Hibbard.
Perhaps the census will show there are two Felix Hibbards. Felix the elder
(b. 1812-d. ???) was bother of Wiley Hibbard (b. 1802-d.1890), father of Felix
the younger (b. 1844 - d. ????). I would like all information on families of
both if available. Felix, the younger, was my Grandfather and Wiley was my
great grandfather. Thanks in advance for any help.

Catharine Carrol died in Campbell Co, TN in 1915; Her parents were Ruben York
and Elizabeth Bayley(Bailey). She was 83 when she died. This would indicate
a birth year of 1832. She was not the oldest child. So Reuben and Elizabeth
must have been married before 1830. On Catharines death notice , it staes
that Elizabeth Bayley was born in Ousley County ( that is in 1915. A long way
to get to this question What county would that most likely be in 1830 or
Thanks for reading the rambling e-mail.

I have been watching the list and have seen Quite a few Queries
about the Sizemore's
I recently added a book to my collection entitled
THE LAND OF SADDLEBAGS a Study of the Mountain People of
Author James Watt Raines (1869-1949)
in Chapter 6 "Moonshine and fueds"
" The Conditions grew Worse year by year. In 1884 a close race
for Sheriff between Cook Humphry , Republican, and S.B. Goodman
Democrat, fanned the coals into a blaze. In a general fight one
man was killed and two wounded . Sizemore was supposedly wounded
by Sheriff Day and Martin by Floyd Tolliver . The Martins and
Sizemore's , the Days and Tollivers organized and Armed .
thus began the fueds...........
It does not mention "Sizemore's" first name ....................

The Ancestral News journals are still being published, and some
back issues are also available.
You will find information on the Clay Co. Ancestral News,

Happy hunting! :)
I have a Lucy Gossett that married Howard Maupin in Clay County,
Kentucky. She was born 1799 and her Mother's name was Mary. Lucy Gossett
(or Grossett) Maupin had several children by Howard Maupin. I doubt we
are looking for the same Lucy Maupin, since you are saying she married
James Roach in 1870 and had 2 children. She would have been pretty old
to have started another family. Thought I would throw this in though, as
I have never been able to find her family.
