Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thomas,
I checked the Carter, Floyd and Letcher county online ftp directories.
I found no such files. Is this adequate or is it necessary to go in to
the actual Ky Archives public_html county directories?
Lorrie
The tarball was discovered in the ftp directory. I would advise anyone to keep an eye out
for this culprit should it show up in any folder in the archive directories. A .tar file
is commonly referred to as a tarball, which is usually compressed to save disk space but
greatly increases the risk of corrupted data. It is considered unethical to use a tarball
when managing archival material.
Another indicator or check, would be to identify any repeating folder structure in your
directories. This is called nesting and is really easy to see. If discovered, look for
the TAR file.
NOTE: Nesting would occur in the subfolders where a file manager uploads files.
The structure for our archives is really simple, like a file cabinet. i.e. ---
Server = ../home 0023/ - this is the storage space at RootsWeb
Directory = /kygwarch/ - this is the file cabinet where we have two... 1)ftp
2)html
Folder = /county/ - each county has a drawer in the FTP and in the HTML file cabinet
Subfolder = /bios/ - (or vitals, or wills, etc.) - these are the drawer dividers full of
file material archived
Example: ../county/tombstones/photos/photos/photos/photos - etc. - The tarball would
more than likely be in the tombstones folder or any folder below it.
I have my fingers crossed that this is just an incidental occurrence, but the
inconvenience is well worth the hassle. Thanks to everyone for helping pin this culprit
to the wall and thank you Lorrie for following up with an excellent question.
