Hi everyone....
I've had a great time working with the site I'm in charge of. When I first took
over the Breckinridge County site a year ago this past Christmas, I knew in my mind I
wanted to make it a site with easy access, simple "names/terms" so those
visiting would want to check out the whole site... not just the basic
"cemetery", "vitals", "Bible", "census", etc. I
used a simple two column table on the TOC page, but within each cell I linked to a
separate page that housed a more detailed linking or the actual contents. I also wanted
to make it "easy on the eyes" for those who might have various eye problems.
Overall I've had a lot of positive response regarding the site (be it content or
visual aspect/accessibility).
One thing that I try to do is make a daily updating to the Breckinridge County mailing
list. If I don't add or update something for that particular day, I don't notify
anyone. Here lately, 7 researchers have been working tirelessly on transcribing the
nearly 3,800 World War I Draft Registration Cards attributed to Breck. Co. To date, we
have approximately 1,700 transcriptions uploaded. Whenever the transcriptions are loaded
onto the site, at the end of the day (twice on the weekends) I send out an email to the
mailing list telling of the latest updates so that someone who might not frequent the site
will know what's going on and want to come visit.
I am toying around with the idea of making specific topics with pages being a specific
shade of color for the background. I haven't totally sold myself on the idea.... yet.
I look forward to seeing everyone's site again to see if I can tweak the Breck. Co.
site even more to make it that much better.
