Folks,
I'll be gone for the month of September and, to prevent mailbox overload
before my return, I'm unsubbing - in a couple of days - from all of my Irish
county lists (33 of them), plus a few more, for the duration. If anyone
wants to reach me personally, my own e-mail mailbox will always be
open......but you won't get a reply until October.
Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
if you run into denning dennen dinninhy or any other name with dnn as its
base please share it with me
thanks jim

In ireland people didnt use middle names the way we do. They used them as
james ben robert. In other word the middle names were the fathers name
Why does that matter well in canada they didnt use the first names but the
middle names. So i had a neil dever who I swore I found in two records but
the fathers name was wrong patrick and then james
Well it turns out his dads name was patrick james.
They came thru canada and in doing so patrick became james. So when they
came here they were used to james. So neil used james. then after a while
they caught on and went back to patrick. This can cause you great
consternation as it did me. I heard this in a lecture at the new england
genealogical historical event in randolph mass a while back.
hope this helps you find them

Otherwise, I will be back in a week.
(Wish me luck...I am going to be trying to find the Irish County for my
Purcell family as my Genealogy Research Day. Its a long shot.)
Best wishes,

I have an ellen kelly who married thomas coyne. i dont know when or where but
they were both born about 1840 in ireland. i have a picture of her. they are
my great great grandparents who settled in marlboro, monmouth county nj.
often called big woods by the irish in area. they also had a daughter who
married into my tansey line also in big woods.
daniel carey was from ireland and married winifred scanlon.
owen brady was born in 1845 son of thomas, and married my great
greatgrandmother in nyc in 1870.he had at least one sister ann/anne.
i also have family named gorey, sullivan, scully, and gallagher and they are
all mixed in somehow in the equation! havent figured it all out yet but
someday i may. by then the genealogists will be writing me up too!
my biggest concern at the moment is finding owen bradys home town and where
he was raised and any possible relatives. his granddaughter, 84 this july, is
going to ireland in october and nothing would make me happier than to have
her be able to see where the grandfather she remembers came from. thanks-linda

A Canon is a step higher than being just Father McCoy.
I don't understand why or how it is granted but the priest is usually still
at the parish level.

I am looking for any information on my gggrrandfather Thomas Gilleesie, b. 1798 in Longford, Ireland and any of his known relatives. He went to Canada sometime in the early 1800's and married Bridget O'Callaghan from Armagh. The Canada census says that he is Irish but I have also been told that name is Scotish. Anyone with any information please contact me at kempmarylou@hotmailcom.
Thank you

I am searching for information on Peter and Margaret Early. They had at
least two sons, Charles and Peter, both born in the 1820's. Charles married
Bridget Kelly but I am not sure whether the marriage took place before or
after Charles and Peter came to the US. Charles and Bridget were here and
married by 1836 when their first daughter, Margaret was born.
On Charles' death certificate from NY, his mother's maiden name looks like
FALLUUN, but the handwriting is hard to read.
Can anyone help??
Thanks, Betsy

Not being up on this sort of thing I used www.dictionary.com
It says:
can·on2 (knn)
n.
A member of a chapter of priests serving in a cathedral or collegiate
church.
A member of certain religious communities living under a common rule and
bound by vows.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
[Middle English canoun, from Norman French canun, from Late Latin cannicus,
one living under a rule, from Latin cann, rule. See canon1.]
Hope this helps,
Christina
i think you misunderstand me...the "head" of the church at one point was
Canon Edward McGaver...i am trying to find out if he was a priest or a lay
person, etc. etc.
