Subject: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] James Macnanamy
There is a newspaper article about the murder of James Mcnanamy (sic
Macnanimy) and Walter Angell who went into the bush out from Marengo Station
to cut shingles and were killed. www.trove.nla.gov.au
15 Oct 1859. They were
in the employ of William West of Marengo Station. If you put “Walter Angell”
into the search box for the digitised newspapers you can follow the trial to
its conclusion i.e. death sentence. The details are fairly gruesome.
Most landholders at this time (including my ancestors) only leased the land
from the NSW government but were known as settlers or squatters because they
literally squatted on the land and moved the aboriginal people off.
This probably applies to William West but Angell and Mcanamy worked for him
so were possibly ex convicts.
If I can help with any more Australian research please let me know.
