Subject: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] FRIEL / O'FRIEL & KANE
I’m hoping to find the region in County Donegal, my ancestors lived. They immigrated by
1841, before the famine, to Portland, Maine. They may have arrived earlier but I’ve not
found a definite match to the family in the 1840 US census.
Margaret KANE / O'KANE b. ca 1791 Ireland, d. Dec 1869 Portland, Maine m. [I assume
in County Donegal] Ireland to John FRIEL/O’FRIEL.
John FRIEL/O’FRIEL may have died before his family emigrated, but certainly died before
the 1850 census. He’s not listed on the burial plot where his wife is buried. In the 1850
census, his wife is a widow.
I descend through their son William b. ca 1830 Ireland [very approximate, his age varies
from record to record], d. 25 Nov 1900 Boston, Mass.; m. 16 Nov 1852 Portland, Maine to
Margaret FRIEL b. ca 1837 Ireland, d. 13 Feb 1913 Charleston, Mass. I’m happy to share
information on descendants of John FRIEL & Margaret KANE, if anyone is interested.
I’ve not had luck finding baptism & marriage records for the family in County Donegal.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
