For a historic research project, I am trying to trace John McCaffrey (also
spelled McCaffery, McCaffary, McCaffry) back to his parents in County
>From his own account he was born in Donegal in 1820, sailed to North
America (probably Canada first) and arrived in the US in 1837 at
Burlington, Vermont where he joined the fairly large Catholic community
in the Archdiocese of Burlington. He was a laborer (perhaps a bit of
mason as well) and worked on canal and railroad projects. In 1843 he
traveled to Southport (now Kenosha) Wisconsin, where he married
Bridget McKean or McKeen in 1848. He said he had a sister in the US
midwest and some report that his mother later came to Vermont. There is
some indication he may be related to Peter McCafferty also of Southport
at that time.
I am trying to learn of his family and also his likely migration route from
Donegal. Is there any way to find out which port he left from and when?
Many of you have suffered the many queries that I have sent over the past 5 years seeking information about William Patterson and Nancy McCready of Brooke County, WV and Eldersville, PA.
The generous responses many of you have sent led to final discovery that has nearly verified the origins of William. The house of William's birth (rcvd from my aunt Martena Kessel) was identified by Eldersville residents as the home of James and John Patterson of Bethel Ridge; later the homestead of Hugh Patterson. As I was fairly sure that John and Jane Patterson had sons Francis and William and since Francis and William are buried at St. John's Graveyard the pieces fell into place.
My most recent estimate of this little known family line (compared to the well known Patterson line of Cross Creek and Lancaster) is below.
I am now seeking to verify the place of origin of this Patterson line. And I am seeking information that would confirm or deny my guess that this line is from county Donegal; and hence of the line of Pattersons/Paterson who moved from Ayreshire, Scotland to Raphoe Barony when James I granted lands to John and James Cuningham about 1608.
1. JAMES PATTERSON b. abt 1725; prosperous landowner of County Donegal.
Note 1: This paternal relationship is deduced from the Armstrong County background of
Woodward Patterson Brown of Kittanning, Pennsylvania who is a descendant of
David Patterson (some of the specifics in this write up indicate errors in
either my assumptions or the write up itself).
Note 2: The relationship of Robert and/or Elizabeth to James and John is an assumption
based upon the closeness of my great-great grandfather (William, son of John & Jane of
Bethel Ridge) to the children of Robert and Elizabeth Patterson. I believe that either
Robert or Elizabeth was a sibling of James and John; the other being their cousin.

WILLIAM PATTERSON b. June 03, 1818; d. September 10, 1879; married Nancy McCready about 1838 (location ??). NANCY MCCREADY, daughter of David McCready and Martha Jones (and granddaughter of Robert McCready and Anne Levins of Cross Creek, PA) was born June 22, 1818 and died May 16, 1906 in Steubenville, Ohio.
John GREER and Sarah Jane PORTER were married in Donemana Presbyterian Church, County Tyrone in April, 1854. I am not sure where John Greer was from but Sarah Jane Porter was from Donemana area, County Tyrone.
Their children were: Rebecca, William W., John, Elizan, Andrew, Thomas, Sarah Jane and Margaret. I have an IGI record of Andrew Greer's birth as 8 Feb 1866, Clady District, Londonderry, Ireland. As Clady is located in County Donegal and Claudy is located in County Londonderry, I am not sure just where this family was located in 1866 or later.
I would appreciate any help with this family. Many thanks. A. Cochrane
