Looking for information on the history of the Reelhorn School in Cleveland Twp., Whitley
Co., Indiana. When was it founded? By whom? For whom was it named? Is it still in
operation? Is it a public or private school?
My ggg-grandfather Jesse Reelhorn and his wife Rebecca Bishop Reelhorn and Jesse's
brother Daniel went west from Ohio in the late 1840s. They settled in what became
Cleveland Twp., Whitley Co., Indiana. My gg-grandfather George Walter Reelhorn was born
there in 1853.
I wondered, since the name Reelhorn is so unusual-- apparently a direct literal
translation from the German "Haspelhorn" by Jesse's and Daniel's father
in a misguided attempt to Americanize-- whether the Reelhorn School was named after one of
my family members. (And if so, why. Jesse died in the Civil War--was it because he was a
war hero? Did he, his wife/widow, or brother donate land or money to build the school?
Did Daniel or his wife become a local teacher of some repute or the first principal of the
school?)
Hopefully someone who knows the school or has access to a written history can enlighten
me! Thanks in advance!
