I went to a site for Whitley county and a small plat map is there but no listing for the
Twps, Ranges and Sections. But it does list the early history and that the county
seat-court house was on section 11 Twp 31N in Richland Twp so I looked above Richland Twp
and found that it is Troy Twp. Does this seem correct to you? The Twp Map does show Rachel
Beals Sec 33 northeast of Larwill. I have done some title work before but it is hard to
find the plat maps if you are not familiar or live in another state that isn't close
to Indiana-thats me! I have been researching the Beal family. I have the histories for the
sons of John Beal that filed for more land than he actually rec'd a patent for. I am
assuming he sold his claims and some of his history for Richland Twp in Madison county
explain this. He was issued a Land Patent on the same date as Rachel Beal, 8/20/1838 for
land in Blackford county. John Beal is the father of the Beal who has Rachel Beals
children in 1870 in Iowa. The!
re are 2 Beals, his sons Thomas and T Jackson Beal that left Indiana and settled in Wayne
Co, Iowa in the late 1850's around the time that the possible daughter Rachel Beal
Jones of this Rachel Beal who filed this claim and got this patent. Gee that is difficult
to explain! You are correct a title search might reveal alot and I have done these for
title purposes and for family history. These patents are the root title. I am looking more
at they sold these and moved on. But I cannot be sure on this one. I can say that I do not
know the laws for filing claims but someone born in 1823 seems to be too young. Unless the
law allowed for a transfer of a claim to a minor that would led to a patent in their name
and yes this I could find at the courthouse. Can you tell me the name of a good county
history that might contain sketches for early settlers of Whitley County? Thank you so
much. Cindy
