This just seems to be a quiet list! Please don't feel as if the only thing you
can post to the list are such as "I have these people in Whitley County...."
because I think the list can be much more than that. We are all here with the common goal
of researching our families and just happen to have certain connections to Whitley County!
So, here are some ideas as what to post to the list (I'm not too picky):
1. Queries of course! When posting queries be as specific as you can as to names,
dates, places, etc. If you receive no response, post it again in about a month or two.
New people join the list and you never know who is going to have that bit of information
that you are looking for. And don't be afraid to ask questions! Several people on
this list have resources for the county so you may be surprised, just don't expect
miracles! Worth a shot to ask anyway!
2. General genealogy questions. Don't know how or where to obtain certain
records and/or information? Ask! Someone will generally know the answer or at least lead
you in the right direction.
3. Helpful websites. This is a big one for me! I don't surf the web much due to
lack of time, but when someone posts a website that they felt was great in helping or just
plain interesting, I check them out and most often end up bookmarking them in my browser.
I figure I'm not the only one who doesn't surf the web much, so what you find on
the internet may be something that many of us haven't found yet!
4. Resources. If you have a resource that you feel could help people on the list and
would like to do look-ups, post to the list! I have done this a few times and can tell
you that researchers are VERY appreciative of such offers and makes it WELL worth your
effort to extend a hand and help others. Meet lots of great people that way :)
5. Miscellaneous. Got old letters, quips from books, lists of members etc.? Post to
the list. Even if it isn't relation to anyone on the list, it makes for great
reading! Even family lore stories are great and most often very interesting!
6. History. Have a history question or comment, post it to the list! Genealogy is
history, so its all relevant! Things such as wars, immigration, naturalization, how homes
were built, what a certain disease was, odd sayings and quotes, even recipes! Everything
has a history to it and it is great to know the reasoning and meanings behind little
things to help us better understand how our ancestors lived.
Okay, think I covered pretty much all the bases! In general, just ask!! I think one
of the greatest things about genealogy is how people come together to help one another.
So with that thought in mind, think I myself will get some things around to post to
the list!
Have a great day and good luck!!
