Message Board Post:
From "Counties of White and Pulaski, Indiana" by F.A. Battey
& Co., Chicago, Illinois, 1883, page 172: "Lee Post Office, in the northwest
corner of the township (Monon), was established about the year 1880. The first Postmaster
was Calvin Anderson. He was succeeded, late in 1882, by Mr. Hoover, the present
incumbent."
From "A Standard History of White County, Indiana" by W.H.
Hamelle, (1915): "OPENING OF THE INDIANAPOLIS, DELPHI & CHICAGO RAILROAD"
describes the opening of a new rail line around 1881 and says "...The building of
what is now a second or air-line division of the Monon system did not result in the
founding of any important towns in White County; in fact, only Guernsey, in Honey Creek
Township, and Lee, in Monon Township, were founded as stations."
The latter reference is available on-line at
http://www.whitecountyindiana.org/history/chv.htm#railway .
There is no direct mention of who the station of Lee was named after, but the President of
the Monon railroad at the time was a man by the name of John Lee.
If I find anything else, I'll leave another reply to this message board.
