Message Board Post:
I am trying to find the ancestors of my GGgrandfather, Isaac K. Smith. What I know is as
follows:
according to most entries in census records, he was born between 1821 - 1822 in North
Carolina.
He appears in a 1850 census record in Monroe, Madison, Indiana with the following family:
Isaac Smith 28 (b 1822)
Clarinda Smith 20 (b 1830) b Ohio
Luray Smith 2 (b 1848) - this could be a name Leon or Leroy
in 1860 he appears in Monroe, Madison, Indiana again with this family:
Isaac Smith 38 (b 1822)
Clarinda Smith 29 (b 1831)
Leroy Smith 12 (b 1848)
James M Smith 9 (b 1851)
Lonzo Smith 7 (b 1853)
John Smith 5 (b 1855)
Mary M Smith 2 (b 1857)
according to
familysearch.org, I find him marrying my GGgrandmother, Catharine Schwin, in
1862 in White County. I do not find a death record for Clarinda and do not know anything
else about her except, according to a census record, she was uneducated. Oddly enough, in
1861 I find a marriage record on
familysearch.org to Elizabeth Murphy in White County.
Need less to say, I am extremely perplexed.
In 1863 I find a Civil War Service record for Isaac K Smith for Indiana.
In 1870, I find him in Morgan, Mercer, Missouri with the following family:
Isaac Smith 48 (b 1822)
Catharine Smith 29 (b 1841) b. Germany
Monroe Smith 18 (b 1852) - This is the James M from above... James Monroe Smith
John Smith 16 (b 1854) I don't know if John is the same as Lonzo.
Mary Smith 12 (b 1858)
William Smith 10 (b 1860)
Sarah A Smith 5 (b 1865)
Charles Smith 3 (b 1867)
Ida Smith 1 (b 1869)
He again appears in the 1880 census in Morgan, Mercer, Missouri, with the following
family:
Isaac K. Smith 59 (b 1821)
Catherine Smith 38 (b 1848)
William Smith 19 (b 1861)
Sarah Smith 15 (b 1865)
Charles Smith 13 (b 1867)
Ida Smith 11 (b 1869)
Amos Smith 5 (b 1875)
Minnie Smith 3 (b 1877)
Drew Smith 1 (b 1879)
According to Pine Cemetery Records (in Mercer County, Missouri) he died in 1889 and his
tombstone says he was born in 1821. I believe him to have been a wealthy farmer/land owner
in that by 1870 he has $6,000 of real estate, $600 of personal estate and his tombstone
for he and Catharine is quite large.
He lists North Carolina, as his birthplace in all censuses except his last census in 1880,
where he states South Carolina, is his birthplace
Currently I'm wondering if he's related to Elisha Smith, also from North Carolina
(b in 1834), also a farmer and living in Monroe, Madison as well.
ANY information about Isaac K. Smith, or any of his descendants is DEEPLY appreciated!
