Mindy, you probably already know this, but if you are looking for anyone with the name
HASKINS, be sure you also look for HOSKINS. The name is often interchanged in the
records. The Hoskins of Guilford and Rockingham Counties NC who were associated with my
gr-gr-grandparents Amos Page (born about 1781, died Apr-May1847 in Guilford Co NC) &
Caroline Simpson, were mostly if not all Quakers.
In fact 2 or 3 years after Amos died, his 5 youngest under-age orphans were each placed in
the home of a different Quaker family. (Quakers could never say no to someone in need.) In
1850 census 4 are found in NC Quaker homes, and 1, my gr-grandfather Calvin Page was with
his Quaker care-givers in Hendricks County IN. One of the orphans, his son Nathaniel H.
Page, was cared for by John and Lydia HOSKINS/HASKINS, born 1825 and 1824 respectively, in
Orange County NC. In that part of the country, it seems HOSKINS was actually the correct
(or more prevalent?) spelling.
Speaking of Cemetery Lookups, my gr-grandpa Calvin A. Page, an architect and builder lived
and worked in or near Winimac, Pulaski County IN, possibly worked or lived in Medaryville
for a time, but seems to have moved to Francesville not long before he died.
On 26 May 1893, The "Winamac Republican" newspaper (Pulaski Co, IN), in a
"Francisville" column by "Daisy", "Mr. Page has completed Joe
Hardesy's new house, which is a master piece of architect (sic) ." Just two weeks
earlier on 12May1893 in the same author's Francesville column, Daisy had written,
"Mr. Flynn commenced laying brick this week on Mr. Bush's new building. C. A.
Page architect. The lower floor is to be occupied by Clark & Barker, and the upper
floor by the I. O. O. F. Daisy."
News stories mention he finished a high-end home of a Joe Hardesy, and either had just
finished or was working on another fine house of a surname Bush. Family stories insist he
had heat stroke, fell off a roof and died. We have narrowed his death to between
16May1893 and 13Apr1895, but can find no death or burial records. He was a member of the
IOOF but when the office there was called, a man said they have no old records and
can't help us.
Sure would appreciate any help on finding info on Calvin's last days and resting
place.
