Message Board Post:
A very helpful person (Larry Holderly) of White County, sent me a copy of the 1873 map
for Prairie Twp, White Co, IN. In 1873, the property owners of the plots in question were
probably:
J. Carr (80 acres)
Thomas Kennedy (80 acres)
August Hildebrand (20 acres)
J. Murphy (20 acres)
(most of these own other land as well).
I found Kennedys buried in Barr cemetery, southeast of Brookston, and a Carr buried in
Carr cemetery north of Brookston (nearer Chalmers). These Kennedys are the parents of
Thomas Kennedy, who later owned part of this land (William and Mariah Kennedy).
The Barrs in the cemetery are the ones from Pickaway Co, OH. I don't know of any
relationship between the two Barr families.
The Carr is John P. Carr, b. 14 May 1826, d. 12 Jan. 1896, husband of Catherine H. Carr,
1831-1863. Another site listing the pioneers of White County says that John P. Carr
arrived in 1848.
Since Thomas Kennedy sold his homestead and bought land in the 1860s, and August
Hildebrand arrived in the 1850s, it looks as if John Carr may be the earliest arrival to
buy Barr land. Who did he buy it from?
From Indiana Marriages 1850 and earlier:
Last Name: Carr
First Name: John P
Spouse- Last Name: Price
Spouse- First Name: Catharine
County: White
Date: 3-7-1850
Some census records that seem to apply, but don't reveal anything:
p. 51
1870 White Co, IN, Prairie Twp, Brookston PO
KENNEDY, Thomas, 38, OH, farmer, 9200, 1970
Catharine, 29
John C., 9
Wm. S., 5
Jacob W., 6/12
On same page:
Carr, Joab
p.64
1860, White Co, IN, Prairie Twp, Brookston PO
Carr, John P, 34, farmer, 18,000?, 8300?
Catharine H., 29
William W., 4?
John P., 8?
Sarah -?- Carr, 81
Benjamin Creamer entered other land in the same section. He entered the E 1/2 of Sec
17/25N/4W, or 320 acres. He entered it on June 18, 1836 and the patent deed was dated
Sept. 10, 1838.
Since the Barr Sides duo bought 200 acres of the W 1/2, that leaves 120 acres in the
section whose owner(s) I haven't located yet.
I have found nothing about S. C. Anderson so far.
Does anyone have any information on land transfers involving these people? I know I need
to drive up to Monticello and search the deed records, but that requires a day off work,
and I keep putting that off.
Thanks for any help.
Susan
