I'll send my mom an email and see if she remembers anything else about him, such as if
he was married or not. I keep emailing her with questions regarding certain things, poor
thing, and forcing her jog her memory about things. But it's good for her, right?
I know that my Cousin Phyllis and my Grandfather had done the majority of the work on the
tree. Cousin Phyl, Grandpa, and my Mom went to a relatives down in Southport (mom says he
was a very well known preacher - but that was 20 years ago.
I will share with you what Mom has on the Ellis Tree down at the bottom.
"James and Leanna settled in Brookston in 1851. They walked from Port Royal, KY with
six dollars because of the Cholera outbreak there. Anna was three weeks old. They had a
negro slave with them and James, Leanna, and the slave are buried in the I.O.O.F. cemetery
in Brookston."
"John N. Ellis died of Uremic poisoning after a hip fracture."
"Supposedly, Eliza's mother was an Owen and a niece of Robert Dale Owen, the
Founder of New Harmony, IN."
I think that it is great that you are doing a book on the cemetery! Grandpa, Grandma,
Uncle Jr., and now my dad are buried there. I spent many spring/summer/fall afternoons
wandering through there. Sure wish I'd had a digital recorder back then so I could
have recorded my Grandpa's stories of the relatives!
I just may take you up on your offer for some help. And in turn, should I be able to help
you I'd be more than glad too.
Have you done any research on the Liberty Chapel Cemetery? I have many relatives that are
buried there. One other quick question, I'm sure you'll know the answer to. Is
there another cemetery in Brookston? I seem to remember a cemetery across the railroad
tracks from where my Uncle had his barbershop, but it has been so very long since I've
been up there, I can't remember for sure. Guess my Mom's memory isn't the
only getting fuddled, lol!
Sincerely,
Tammy
