Diane,
Thank you so much for checking the index. The only information I have to go
on is William Chapman's obituary which states he is interred in the
Brookston Cemetery:
The Monticello Herald, Monticello, Ind., Feb. 22, 1877: DIED -- Feb 14th
1877, of acrofula consumption, Wm Chapman, aged 56 years and ten days. He
leaves a wife, daughter and five sons to morn his loss. Deceased was
interred after the rites of the I. O. of O. F., in the Brookston Cemetery.
A large concourse of people were in attendance, conducted by D. E. Hunter at
the M. E. Church; and then followed in procession to the grave. The
following prominent gentlemen of Monticello were in attendance at the
funeral: Messrs. J. H. Wallace, Prosecuting Atty., Irvin Greer, Sheriff,
Geo. Uhl, Auditor, and McCuaig, the gentlemanly proprietor of the McCuaig
House.
I was hoping that this Chanas (sp? -- the name is difficult to read in the
census) would have also been buried in the same cemetery.
It was even a hunch that Chanas had died because she is with William's
family in the 1860 census (at age 65) but not in the 1870 census. She could
have been living somewhere else. The only other possible lead I have is
that she may have been buried (if she actually died) in Monticello since
William had obvious connections there.
Thanks again for your help. I appreciate your time. I'll keep hunting for
hints.
Kelly

Hi Kelly,
I have the Master Index and the cemetery listings, as put out by the White
County Genealogical Society - and do not find any Chapmans listed in the
Brookston Index. That does not mean that they are not buried there, I
suppose - perhaps could be buried there but no headstone? They have also
pooled some information from funeral homes, but I personally don't know if
there are listings in the White County booklets that are unmarked burial
information only. Are you sure that William Ross Chapman is buried
there? The alternative is, I suppose, that the tombstone(s) may be
unreadable now and not included? The Brookston IOOF Cemetery was
originally recorded in 1979, updated in July 1996.
Good luck!
Diane

I'm looking for information on a Chunas (Chamas/Chanas/Chumas sp?) Chapman,
a 65 yr old female found in the White Co., IN 1860 census. She was living
in the household of William Ross Chapman (age 39). I believe Chunas may be
William's mother. Chunas was born in Maryland.
If someone has access to the Cemetery index for Brookston Cemetery I would
appreciate a lookup. Chunas was not listed with the same family in the
1870
census, so I believe she died between 1860 and 1870.
I'm grasping at straws here. William Ross Chapman is my brick wall. He
was
born in 1821 in OH. I'm searching for his parents and his place
of birth.
William died 14-Feb-1877 and is buried in the Brookston cemetery, so I'm
assuming that Chunas may be buried in the same cemetery.
Thanks in advance,
