Hi Lena,
I don't have an index - but I did scan through Big Creek Township
digitalized images of the microfilm, and did not locate any Nelsons in that
Township in 1860 White County Indiana census. Is 'your' Nathan Nelson the
one who married Mary M. Eddings in 1870 in Tippecanoe County? If so, you
might want to check Tippecanoe County 1860 census for him there? (Heritage
Quest Indiana Vital Records CD - IN Marriage Index (WPA extractions) lists
that marriage on March 17, 1870; Tippecanoe County Book C-13, pg 1),
whereas the 1870 census entry in Big Creek reports they were married in May
of 1870. There are no other Nelsons (or any Eddingtons) in Big Creek Twp
in 1870 census.
Using Tippecanoe County as a perhaps clue, I searched through 1860 census
entries for Prairie Twp, White County, which borders on Tippecanoe county
and found this following entry which could possibly be 'your' Nathan (I do
not know the relationship of these people - but one would guess that at
least some are related in some way - perhaps Malinda and Nathaniel are
siblings - ?children of Maria? - note in the Malinda Barnes 1870 census
entry she lists her parents of foreign birth, altho that is not noted on
Nathan and Mary Nelson's 1870 census entry):
Prairie Twp, White Co, IN 1860 Census; entry 635/637; pg 555:
James E. Barnes; 36y; Farmer; $13000/2650; Ohio
Maria Sefton(?); 45y; Ireland; (cannot read or write)
Malinda Nelson; 22y; Indiana
Nathaniel Nelson; 13y; Indiana
George Oppel; 30y; Germany
There is a marriage listed in the above Marriage Index CD for a Melinda
Nelson and James E. Bernes on May 21, 1865 in White County, Indiana (Book
C-3, pg 10). They are still in Prairie Twp in 1870 Census; entry 365/366;
pg 265A:
Barnes, James E; 45y; farmer; $22500/$2600; Ohio
Barnes, Melinda; 30y; keeping house; IN; father of foreign birth; mother of
foreign birth
Barnes, Elizabeth A; 2y; IN
Barnes, Lilly A; 2y; IN
Barnes, Minnie M; 8/12y; IN; born in Aug
Kruining?, Matilda; 17y; domestic servant; Holland; parents of foreign birth
Williams; Frederick; 32y; laborer; VA
Bostic, Jesse; 18y; laborer; IN
Cottingham, Dora?; 20y; male; laborer; IN
I hope you may find some of this info useful - more questions than answers,
though!
Good luck!

Subject: [INWHITE] 1860 census lookup
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
I was wondering if anyone out there has access to an
index for the 1860 census and could tell me if there
is a Nathan Nelson listed in White County. He would
have been about 13 years old. I would like to know who
his parents and siblings were (if he was in White
County at all at the time).
In 1870 he was 23 and living in Big Creek Township
with his wife Mary.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Lena
