It's probably too early for birth records unless you can find a church record.
Do you know if his parents were also living in White County, Indiana? If so, then I would
look for a will or estate in the probate records to see if John William Campbell is named
as an heir. (If you can'tt find it in White County, you might also check the
surrounding coounties--this will take lots of time but if you really want to find it, this
is one good way to show relationships). This would show the relationship and lists his
parents if he is listed as a child. Many of these records are on microfilm and available
at your local family history center (check
www.familysearch.org for the branch closest to
you)
Also if he married in 1855, I would check the 1850 census to see if he is listed as a
child/unmarried adult with his parents.
