Hi Wendy,
I don't have access to the obit but I do have a suggestion to aid you in
your search. Since he died after 1930 and was living in white County, you
should also check the death records in Tippecanoe Co. In my research for
the Brookston Cemetery, I have found many people who physically died in
White County but their actual death record is recorded in Tippecanoe Co.
because that is where the hospital/ coroner is located and the only place
where they could be pronounced dead. If he is not there in Tippecanoe Co.
check the surrounding counties. Did he die in a nursing home or at his
residence? Do you know?
There was a newspaper obit reference to someone who could be his wife, in
the Lafayette Journal & Courrier. This probably doesn't help you find him,
but it might tell you what funeral home they used. The same funeral home
was probably used for him.

You might also check with the local funeral homes. They kept records and
should have a record of when he died and where he was buried. Here are
the funeral homes I know about--there are probably more
Thompson Funeral Home, 1935-1965
Hartzler Funeral Homer, 1965-2003
Hartzler-Clapper, 2003-current
if you want the Thompson Funeral records you need to contact Marc Clapper,
who currently has these records.
You might also check with the Genealogical Society to see if they know
about any other funeral homes in the area. If all else fails use the
phone book and call all them. Someone had to bury your ancestor.
If he was the last of his family line, then he may not have an obit. But
if he died, obits for the Monticello Herald are located in the Monticello
Library. They are not indexed so you would have to know the exact date he
died and then look for the issue after it for a few days. I am not local
or I would look it up for you. The library won't do look ups however, so
you will need to find someone to go there for you.
You might also check with the Indiana State Library and see if his death
was recorded at the state level. He died late enough that it might.
FYI--Levi's son, Ralph H. Sayre is buried in the Brookston IOOF Cemetery,
as well as three of Ralph's children. I don't have any record of Levi
being buried there though.
Best of luck!
