I do not know where Hemphill Cemetery is located, but Mary Katherine (Oldham)
Hinds lies there with some of her children. She is my 2 great grandmothers. She and
Jason Hind(s) grew up together and their families (Oldham and Hind(s) moved from Beaver
County, PA initially to Jennings County, IN. From there, they moved North winding up in
first Jasper and then White County.
Katherine died and Jason later married a Naomi Dawson. There were several
children by each wife. I do not know what happened to most of them.
My great grandfather Van Buren served with various regiments during the Civil
War. He began service in the 20th Indiana in July 1861 and was captured on the vessel
Fanny above Cape Hatteras near Chicamocomico (Modern day Rodanth), NC in Pamlico Sound.
After spending some time in Libbey Prison, he was released in May of 1862. A monument in
Rensselaer has his name (spelled Hines) along with others taken in the action.
He joined the 54th Indiana later that year. He had been furloughed from the 54th Indiana
after serving at the siege of Vicksburg at the end of June1863. Van said that his trip
home was interrupted. His train had just gotten into Ohio and he and some others were
taken from the train to face the threat posed by Robert E. Lee north of the Mason Dixon.
He met trouble at Gettysburg and according to his report, fought with his old unit, 20th
Indiana at the Wheatfield area.
Around 1863 he married a lady named Mary FRETERSON or FIRDRICCON, or something similar.
The story told in our family is rather sad In 1864, Mary did not want Van to go back
into service and told him that if he joined, she would not be waiting when he came back.
The stubborn Hinds went back in and served with the 48th Indiana until the end of the war.
Mary did not welcome him home when he returned. I have heard that a child may have been
involved, but I do not know. Some time later, Van and Mary divorced, she did not even
come to the divorce proceedings. Ultimately Van remarried Anna Eliza Harris from near
Baltimore.
Thanks again.
