I do not know where Hemphill Cemetery is located, but that would be my 2 great
grandmothers. She and Jason grew up together and their families (Oldham and Hind(s) moved
from Beaver County, PA initially to Jennings County, IN. From there, they moved North
winding up in first Jasper and then White County.
Katherine died and Jason later married a Naomi Dawson. There were several children by
each wife. I do not know what happened to most of them.
My great grandfather Van Buren served with various regiments during the Civil War.
Around 1863 he married a lady named Mary FRETERSON or FIRDRICCON, or something similar.
The story told in our family is rather sad. Apparently Van was determine to go back into
the war with the 48th Indiana in early 1864. He had been furloughed after serving at the
siege of Vicksburg at the end of June1863. His train had just gotten into Ohio and he and
some others were taken from the train to face the threat posed by Robert E. Lee north of
the Mason Dixon. He met trouble at Gettysburg and according to his report, fought with
his old unit, 20th Indiana at the Wheatfield area.
Anyhow, Mary did not Van to go back into service and told him that she would not be
waiting when he came back. The stuborn Hinds went back, and Mary did not welcome him home
when he returned. I have heard that a child may have been involved, but I do not know.
Some time later, Van divorced and ultimately married Anna Eliza Harris from near
Baltimore.
Well enough of that. If you see anything else on the family, please let me know.
Thanks again.

Several of my Hinds family are mentioned in the Remington history.
Jason was my 2-g grandfather and Van Buren Hinds (also spelled Hines in a couple of
places) was my g grandfather.
Any information on Hind / Hinds / Hines and what happened to them would be appreciated.
Thanks.
