From the Logansport Press Nov 20, 1967: DEATH CLAIMS ETHEL STAGGS OF
MONTICELLO
(WHITE COUNTY). MONTICELLO - Mrs. Ethel Staggs, 83, of Rt.4, Monticello,
the widow of Alva R. Staggs, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at White County Hospital.
She had been ill for 12 years and entered the hospital Sunday morning,
but death was unexpected. Mrs. Staggs was a 1902 graduate of the Monticello
High School and a 1906 graduate of Indiana University. She was born April
2, 1884, in White County. Her marrige on June 1, 1917, in South Bend, was
to Alva R. Staggs, who died Jan. 19, 1942. Staggs was a basketball coach
at Anderson High School for 16 years and also coached at Lebanon and Monticello.
Mrs. Staggs taught school in Monticello and area schools. She was a member
of the Monticello Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary,
and lived here most of her life except for the 16 years her husband coached
at Anderson. Surviving include two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Sarah Jane) Williams
of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Arthur (Mary E.) Koestner of Rt. 4, Monticello,
seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild; a brother Frank E. Roberts
of Monticello, and a sister, Marjorie Vandermuelen of Port Jefferson, N.Y.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home.
The Rev. Wallace Mcdonald and the Rev. Maurice Davis will officiate and
burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home
after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
