The family name varies fron Bretton to Britton thru the years (not uncommon). Henry
Britton married Sophia Johnson in White county on 5 Oct 1850. In the 1860 census the
family was in White county, Princeton township, page 32, Post Office of Reynolds Station,
and was headed by Henry Britton, 47, farmer, born in England, and included Sophia, 25,
Ohio, - Joseph G, 6, Ind, - Wm H, 4, Ind, and John W, 1, Ind. In the 1870 census the
family was in White county, Princeton township, Page 4, Post Office of Seafield, and was
headed by Henry Bretton, 53, farmer, born in England, and included Sophia, 40, keeping
house, Ohio - Joseph S, 17, at home, Ind, - Wm H, at home, Ind, - John W, 11, Ind, -
Jeremiah M, 8, Ind, - Idabelle, 4, Ind, and Lilley May, 9 months, Ind, born the previous
October. Prior to 1880 no family relationships were shown in any census and the following
has some obvious errors, normally the relationship refer to the head of household. In the
1880 census the family !
was in Kansas, Cloud county, Elk township, Dist 55, page 33, and was headed by John
Britton, 21, farming, born in Ind, father in Pa and mother in Va, and included his wife
Sophia, 49, keeping house, born Ohio, father in Pa and mother in Md, - his son William,
23, works on farm (wof), Ind, - his son Joseph, 26, wof, Ind, - his son Jerry, 19, wof,
Ind, - his daughter Ida, wof, Ind, and his daughter Ida, 10, Ind. I think the enumerator
made a mistake in listing Sophia as his wife, should have been mother and all
relationships relate to her. Hope this helps. Don
